With federal immigration sweeps showing no signs of slowing across Southern California, there is growing concern from top officials, spiritual leaders and business owners that a climate of fear was sending more people underground and changing the rhythm of city life.
Once-bustling immigrant hubs, including MacArthur Park, the Garment District, downtown's produce market and areas of the Eastside have seen a noticeable reduction in foot traffic over the last week, with some businesses forced to close as a result.
It comes as social media is rife with videos of people spotting immigration agents at shopping centers, markets and neighborhood streets, and capturing federal agents making arrests at swap meets, car washes and other businesses.
Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez said he has been "disturbed" by how many of these raids have been carried out, noting they've caused a deep panic among his majority-Latino parishioners.
"People are staying home from mass and work, parks and stores are empty, the streets in many neighborhoods are silent," Gomez in an opinion piece for Angelus, a local Catholic news outlet. "Families are staying behind locked doors, out of fear. ... This situation is not worthy of a great nation."
At the 7th Street Produce Market Wednesday morning, a spot usually bustling in the mornings with customers filling up plastic bags of vegetables and fruits — far fewer people than normal walked among the shops. Parking at the market was plentiful and several shops that are usually open were shuttered instead.

This appears to be a duplicate thread...it might get pulled. You were just a few minutes too late. Just warning you, FRiend!
shuttered....means already destroyed?
Well when you riot and burn cars it tends to keep shoppers away.
“Angelus, a local Catholic news outlet”
There’s some real irony in that given how Catholic Charities played such a big role in creating the illegal immigrant population in the first place.
Hey, I’m a Latino and I wouldn’t be afraid to go shopping in LA because of the presence of ICE. Maybe because I’m not an illegal alien—or an alien of any kind, for that matter. Do they think all Latinos are illegal aliens?
AKA, less crime...
Good.
L
Thanks for sharing the good news.
Let the self deportations continue and accelerate!
Well, you should not have CREATED that environment by inviting the illegal alien INVASION. Californians are incredibly stupid. They’d jump off the Golden Gate Bridge and wonder why they got wet.
I did search before I posted. I guess my typing is a bit too slow.
MacAuthur Park is melting in the dark.
LOL, it doesn’t take much. I was so pissed the other day, I posted a long post about the 787 crash opining on the RAT (Ram Air Turbine) from my experience as a Jet Mechanic in the Navy, and spent a lot of time trying to explain it in a way that could be followed, and...the thread was pulled as a duplicate.
If I spend that much time on a post I usually save it as a text file, but...in this case, I didn’t.
I am not at all militant about duplicate threads, but some people aren’t. Well, I try to live and learn.
But they are for violent riots and legalized shoplifting. Is that good for business?
These people can voluntarily go home... then they can apply to come here legally. ZERO sympathy for people who illegally broke into our country.
“L.A. street life ‘paralyzed’ as ICE raids keep shoppers away, close businesses”
In other words Hispanics there will now have to pay SALES TAX.
Agents in green ICE uniforms are driving down.
Someone left the cake out in the rain
Prudent shop owners close as well. And board up the windows if they can...
“A climate of fear”
Yeh if you are a lawbreaking illegal somewhere you ain’t pose to be it can be scary. Get out!
