Immigrant protests, unrest in L.A. reverberate in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — The action may be on the streets of Los Angeles, but fallout from the immigrant protests is roiling politics in Mexico at a delicate moment — days before Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to meet President Trump in their much-anticipated inaugural face-to-face encounter.

Sheinbaum has been on the defensive since Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem — at an Oval Office event in Trump’s presence — accused the Mexican president on Tuesday of “encouraging violent protests.”

While Sheinbaum has assailed the U.S. immigration raids and backed immigrants’ rights to protest, there is no public record of her ever having backed violence. A day before Noem’s accusation, she said the exact opposite and called on Mexicans in Southern California to act peacefully.

Nonetheless, Mexican opposition figures have embraced Noem’s charges and enthusiastically sought to amplify them. Critics also have seized upon Sheinbaum’s comments last month — weeks before the L.A. protests — calling on Mexicans in the United States to “mobilize” against a planned U.S. tax on cash transfers to Mexico.

An opposition senator, Lily Téllez, posted a video on X last week accusing Sheinbaum of emboldening compatriots in the U.S. to “violate the law without consequences, as if it were Mexico,” an assertion echoed by other critics.

The barrage of accusations has put Sheinbaum in a delicate position: She is obliged to defend immigrants in the United States, as Mexican leaders have always done, but cannot be seen as inflaming bilateral tensions. Still, she has lashed out at her domestic critics as “anti-patriotic.”

“How is it that Mexicans dare to say I promoted violence in the United States? With what objective?” the president asked Friday. “So that there’s not a good relationship between Mexico and the United States? Or, worse, that the United States does something to Mexico? They...”

OK, Lily, how about the United States just adopt Mexico's immigration laws on illegal aliens?

“ Or, worse, that the United States does something to Mexico?”

I’m glad she’s keeping that in the back of her mind.

No worries, Jorge W. Trump already folded. Amnesty for (almost) all!

Those deportations he’s promising? As long as they’re not violent criminals, that’s just a vacay visiting the family at home before they come back as “legals”!

If only we had elected you instead! You'd be able to snap you fingers and get the courts and congress to obey you. You wouldn't have to compromise on anything!

So amnesty now is a compromise for congress and the courts?

What else are you going to explain away with your slavish bootlicking?

What "amnesty" are you babbling about?

There are at least 30 million illegals. It will take years to round them all up. Can't get them all at once. Going after the gangsters first is the reasonable thing to do, and the courts are blocking it every step of the way.

Compounding your ignorant insults now by calling me a “girl”? I’ve given out links and sources multiple places here. But not to rude snots like you. (And if you knew how to use google or followed the actual news, you wouldn’t have to ask.)

You’re a fragile little girl who gets her panties in a bunch when asked to back up your nonsensical posts- just like progressives...

Hence you make baseless accusations with no evidence then when challenged to offer proof to back them up it is the responsibility of others to search for it....you are beyond pathetic...

Trump said this on TruthSocial 3 days ago:
“Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace. In many cases the Criminals allowed into our Country by the VERY Stupid Biden Open Borders Policy are applying for those jobs. This is not good. We must protect our Farmers, but get the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE USA”

So to be fair, 9ylurker was right to call out such Maga backstabing.
Trump has since then, I believe, renounced to his nod to the Chamber of Commerce traitors. But it only shows the merit of calling him out instead of agreing to all he did.

It says NOTHING about the “amnesty” which was the accusation....

“Amnesty” and finding a way to protect farmers are night and day....

Thanks. I don’t think he actually has. He has talked about deporting 20 million (which might be a big third of them), but not out of nowhere, I’m sure, Alex Jones today was describing how those without violent criminal records would be able to go do the touch-back amnesty that Bush and McCain used to push. That means such a 20 million (though the proposed funding is only supposed to cove 1 million a year) could really mean worse than nothing, as they are given amnesty and allowed to return as legal immigrants.

Trump also went bizarrely over the top defending his amnesty when he first brought it up this week. He actually claimed that if farmers weren’t able to keep their longtime illegal slaves, er, laborers, they’d have to replace them with violent, illegal gang members:

Since day one, it was all about the violence. Anyone claiming to be just protesting is a liar or encouraging rioters. They know they are not peaceful, and they know what will happen.
