A bus full of Jewish children aged between five and 12 were submitted to the drunken abuse of five teenagers who allegedly hurled anti-Semitic lines abuse at them, including “kill the Jews” and “Heil Hitler,” while threatening to slit their throats.

Police confirmed the teens, who were arrested in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday morning, are aged between 15 and 17 and were too drunk to be interviewed, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. They were then released into the custody of their parents without charge and are expected to be interrogated later on Thursday.

Around 30 children from Moriah College, Mt Sinai College and Emmanuel School were on the bus when it stopped to pick up the youths, who were reportedly in school uniforms.

The youths began racially taunting the children on board, saying “kill the Jews,” “free Palestine” and “Heil Hitler,” while physically threatening others, police allege.

It’s commonplace to assume that anti-Israel protests, and rising hostility toward Jews, are somehow a reaction to Israel’s conduct in Gaza. But that is not so, explains Dave Rich, a careful student of British anti-Semitism:

Two days after the [October 7] massacre, more than 45 British Muslim activists, leaders, and preachers who described themselves as “leading members of the British Muslim community” published a joint statement affirming “the right to armed struggle.” . . . In Oldham, an imam was alleged to have preached, “God rid us of the Jews, the usurpers, oppressors, and aggressors.”

Tellingly, the worst week for anti-Semitic incidents in the UK was the week following the October 7 massacre—well before Israel’s response had reached its peak. . . . It wasn’t images of dead Palestinians that sparked this outburst of anti-Jewish hatred; it was images of dead Jews.

This timeline shares something in common with the encampments at U.S. universities, which began in earnest during an extended pause in Israel’s Gaza campaign. Rich adds:

“Free Palestine” became the cri de guerre for anti-Semites, a rhetorical weapon used to strike fear into Jews in Western cities; the left-wing equivalent of “Heil Hitler,” in this specific usage.
