Paul says Senate panel will trim border security funding in ‘big, beautiful bill’

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, told reporters Tuesday that his panel will unveil changes to the House-passed bill to enact President Trump’s agenda that will be more “conservative” and propose dramatically less money for border security.

Paul has argued for weeks that Congress doesn’t need to spend $150 billion to secure the border and beef up immigration enforcement since border crossings plunged after Trump took office in January.

“It will actually be the conservative version of how much money we spend” on the border, Paul told reporters.

He said the Senate’s text under the jurisdiction of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee would propose about “half as much money” as the $150 billion passed by the House.

“The wall, if you look at the [Customs and Border Protection (CBP)] website — until they removed it yesterday — they said it would cost $6.5 million per mile” to build the border wall, Paul said.

“If you add that up for about 1,000 miles that’s $6.5 billion. They asked for $46.5 billion, so they got a math problem,” he added. “Instead of addressing the math problem, CBP took that off their website two days ago.”

Paul posted on social media Monday that Congress doesn’t need to spend $150 billion to secure the border and enforce immigration law through deportations and other actions, arguing that the Trump administration could get the job done for half the cost.

“We don’t need $150 billion to secure the border. We can do it for half that — $75 billion — and still protect the American people,” he wrote. “The math backs it up.”

Yep... more shilling for rand paul...

Who is revealing himself to be an open border, pro illegal immigration and equity proponent...

who thinks his way to the 2028 presidency is going to be to oppose Trump everywhere he can,

and put the republicans back into the minority party....

Exactly. We've neglected the border for far too long. Now Rand wants to queer it again.

Libertarians are ALL open border weirdos. Rand is no exception. Just about every politician from Kentucky is a weirdo, no matter the party. However, The Turtle seems to have gone to ground. I have not heard him making turtle noises lately.

Drop dead, Rand.

Yup, what little of the wall we built needs maintenance, cameras need replacing or updating, electronics do not last forever, they have torn holes in the wall in places

There are so many other places Rand could look for wasteful spending, and after so many years of Biden and Obama and Clinton ignoring the border to allow illegals to come in easily, and stay,..

Nope he has to start with this. Hes wrong on this.

> propose dramatically less money for border security <

This would be like FDR saying, “Hey, we’re spending too much money on aircraft carriers” after Pearl Harbor.

I’m a fan of Rand Paul, in general. And he’s probably got a point here. But this is not the time to fuss about border security spending. Look elsewhere. Cut NPR. Cut nonsensical overseas grants. Etc.

Leave border security spending alone, for now. Fix it once the threat is gone. Completely gone.

This is literal stupidity, on the same level as a box of rox.

The very last thing perhaps that should be cut out of this bill is border security.

The only reason for Rand to target border security is to deal a kill shot to the bill. In other words, take an unpopular bill and make it even less popular. That will ensure it never passes.

He’s just an open borders shill.

The senate has always been a chamber of egotistical fools.

Rand, can't you see that we do need to fund stopping one of our biggest problems? Illegal crossings, drug smuggling and human trafficking that all deal with border security?

You're not helping, Dude.

Does that $46.5 billion include funding for staffing and upkeep of the wall? If so, not a penny should be touched. Border security is not the place to cut costs! I generally respect Rand, but if he screws around on border security it’s a serious problem.

He’s already quoted as wanting to keep the illegals here and give them all jobs.
