Super-aged Japan now has 9 million vacant homes. And that’s a problem

The number of vacant houses in Japan has surged to a record high of nine million – more than enough for each person in New York City – as the east Asian country continues to struggle with its ever-declining population.

Abandoned houses are known in Japan as “akiya” – a term that usually refers to derelict residential homes tucked away in rural areas.

We will get there also. Gen Z and perhaps Gen Alpha don’t seem likely to cause any reproduction bubble. I expect our national population to decline sharply.

The Japanese can invite new residents from fabulous locales like Africa, the middle east, Mexico and central America.

This is the best thing possible for japan, and hopefully this happens in america too. God forbid young people actually have the chance to own homes, and for a decent price!

People in Japan don’t want “old” houses. It’s a cultural thing. Homes over 30 years old are frequently abandoned, and I’d bet the vast majority of these homes are older than 30 years. If you don’t mind a fixer upper, you can get them cheap, though many are not for sale.

The Japanese all want to live and work in Tokyo. There are at least a million first-world gaijin who would love to move to Japan, lives in the countryside houses, and become a generation of Lafcadio Hearns, who wouldn’t spoil the country like third worlders and jihadis in Europe and the US. Japan would rather watch the houses rot.

“””Abandoned houses are known in Japan as “akiya” – a term that usually refers to derelict residential homes tucked away in rural areas.”””

When the children move from the rural farm to the big city this is what happens. Same is true in much of the midwest USA.

I suspect for every one of these abandoned homes and new residence was built in a large city.

In the (very) early 1990s, it looked like Japan was going to smash us economically and Americans were actually starting to panic.

But Rush had a solution for Japan: Export Liberalism.

...and so Japan did liberalize and women could now “do their own thing”, rather than stay home and raise kids, and enough of them “did their own thing”, that their birth rate has crashed...as it has in EVERY COUNTRY where women can “do their own thing”.

There are places in the USA where homes go for very cheap.

The homes exist in places where people do not want to live, or where there are no jobs.

Islam does not allow women to “do their own thing”.

Be careful of what you buy. Lots of restrictions, arcane remodeling rules, and HOA type management. Sure, you can get a house for a few dollars, but spend many thousands trying to please the locals. These are mostly abandoned run-down derelict homes. At least it isn't like Detroit neighborhoods where they're giving away homes; lacking a certain type of residents that Detroit has.

“Islam does not allow women to “do their own thing”.”

Yep, and same with African societies and to a lesser extent, those in Latin America.

IMHO there’s nothing wrong with that. The Japanese have their own culture and traditions that they want to maintain.

If my wife agreed with it, we would be there in a heartbeat. My lovely tending to the gardens and I’ll be fishing. If there is a beach nearby even the better.
