Organizers behind the Black Lives Matter mural in front of Santa Cruz City Hall are hosting a repainting of the public art piece on Saturday, with proceeds from the event going toward the recovery of Thairie Ritchie, a local activist who set himself on fire while standing atop the mural on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Honor what? The guy lit himself on fire. It’s not a mural. It’s yellow paint on a street

They could sell more tickets if they were to reenact Ritchie’s self-immolation.

Well, if the idiots who support this crappola lose money — give it to grifters and parasites — then they have less to damage other things. So, go for it.

Then a late night drive by with a paint gun can reboot the entire process.

I don’t recall seeing any African Americans in Santa Cruz when I’ve visited. Mainly just for the board walk, though. It’s gotta be minimal.

They are honoring his spiritual contribution.
He brought forth spirits in his demonstration.

I’m guessing it was diesel.

Back in the day there were a tone of Hispanics, some since way before 1849 and Asians, mostly Japanese return from Manzanar.
There were some blacks living around the West Side, Wilkes circle.
There was NO, ZIP, ZERO racism back in the day. None. We went to school, partied with each other and worked with one another.

Is paint flammable?

. . . You perhaps are referring to paint designed to adhere to outdoor surfaces, such as the sides of buildings?

Such paint would, in my experience, be oil-based, and therefore highly inflammable.

I can't speculate on why you asked, but since we're all interested in maintaining public spaces to be attractive and clean, it's an excellent question, and there's your answer.

Yeah, what are they repainting it for? so some copycat can also light themselves on fire?

Sounds like a plan.
What could go wrong?

She added that the group views repainting the mural at this time as a way to honor Ritchie: “He always led events centered on the mural, and repainting feels important because of what is happening politically.”

Awww, what’s “happening politically,” Shandara? You mean normal, productive true Americans taking our country back? Does that bother you, Shandara?

“I think when you see people come together and you see all the different people out and represented, it’s encouraging us towards a more diverse city, but we’re welcoming it even more by celebrating ourselves and our differences in each other,” said Willis.

The mural will also be incorporated into the community’s annual Juneteenth celebrations.”

I was wondering what sort of racist oppression in Santa Cruz would drive someone to self-immolation. Not enough reparations?
