The crew of a cargo ship carrying 3,000 vehicles to Mexico, including 800 electric vehicles, abandoned ship after they could not control a fire in waters off Alaska's Aleutian island chain.
Smoke was initially seen coming from the deck loaded with electric vehicles Tuesday, according to a Wednesday statement from the ship’s management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime.
There were no reported injuries among the 22 crew members of the Morning Midas.

How do the currents move from there?
One thing is for certain, they weren’t Teslas. It would have been in the headline.
South right past Vancouver, California all the way down the Pacific coast to South America.
A battery is a fuel tank and an oxidizer tank, right next to each other, separated by a membrane a fraction of an inch thick.
They must be BYD. Lots of them are burning in China. People there who bought BYD can't get insurance for them.
A Chinese shipment sailing under a Liberian flag from China to Mexico starts on fire off the Aleutians. Is that a typical route?
Wow. If only they had followed my method for EVs on those large ferries. Have a large, flat barge that you tow behind the ferry. All of the EVs have to park on the barge that the ferry tows. If, when, they start burning simply cut the tow line.
Meanwhile, in Morro Bay, Kalifornia, the Wizards of Smart are dealing with a laaaaarge battery fire that does not float, although they probably wish they could submerge and hide it. It ignited twice, and now they have to deal with the massive amount of toxicity as they clean, demolish their “bright idea.”
The links below are fascinating examples of the insanity they brought to themselves. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) would be hilarious if not for the seriousness of the situation.

This is probably worse than the Exxon Valdez.

Compared to gasoline, which it inflammable until it has oxygen to combine with. Those batteries are self-contained semi-explosives.
Thank you. Lots of pollution to our west coast.
TBF this isn’t really that suspicious and *probably* is actually just an accident due to poorly made Chinese EVs catching fire.
Probably STOLEN automobiles to Mexico...
Will this be covered by an insurance claim?
Yes. A great circle route.
Mobile land mines.
Ban them. Let them blow up in China.
Seems odd, doesn’t it?
NavyShoe pointed out it is a typical route. Must be that the currents make it cost effective by reducing fuel consumption.
The headline should have said another ship is burning.
Run a steam engine. As an electric vehicle catches on fire, you can harness the energy to turn water into steam to propel the ship.
