Why Tesla sales are rebounding in Norway (kings of hydropower) while Europe lags

Tesla's sale of new cars in Norway skyrocketed 213% in May from a year ago, bucking a downward trend across Europe. Elon Musk's U.S. electric vehicle maker has suffered from a sharp decline in European sales amid reputational damage. Rico Luman, senior sector economist for transport and logistics at Dutch bank ING, described Tesla's new car sales data in Norway as "quite remarkable."

Tesla's sale of new cars in Norway skyrocketed 213% in May from a year ago, according to official registration data, bucking a downward trend across Europe.

Tesla car sales in Norway jumped to 2,600 last month, data from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) showed on Monday, up from 832 over the same period a year earlier. The increase was primarily driven by sales of the firm's revamped Model Y compact sport utility vehicle.

The U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker's European sales have recently suffered from a sharp decline amid reputational damage, in large part due to CEO Elon Musk's incendiary rhetoric and political activities.

Industry groups on Monday reported significantly lower May sales for new Tesla vehicles in Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Sweden.

Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian EV Association (NEVA), which represents electric car owners in the country, said the Tesla Model Y appeared to be popular nationwide, noting that the automaker's recent price campaigns.

"The Tesla Model Y has sold well and is popular in Norway, likely because it is good value for money and because it meets Norwegians' needs for large luggage space, high ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and a tow hitch," Bu told CNBC via email.

Top Ten Countries by Share of Electricity from Hydropower
The countries with the highest percentage of their electricity generated from hydropower are often not the largest producers in absolute terms, but they are highly dependent on this renewable source. Based on recent data, the top ten nations where hydropower accounts for the largest share of electricity generation are:

Norway – Nearly 100% of electricity comes from hydropower, making it the world leader by percentage.

Paraguay – Almost all of Paraguay’s electricity is generated from hydropower, largely due to the Itaipu Dam shared with Brazil.

Nepal – Hydropower provides the majority of Nepal’s electricity, with shares typically exceeding 90%.

Ethiopia – Hydropower supplies a very high share, often above 90% of total electricity.

Laos – The country relies on hydropower for a large majority of its electricity, frequently above 90%.

Tajikistan – Hydropower contributes over 90% of the country’s electricity.

Zambia – Hydropower accounts for a significant portion, often close to 90%.

Iceland – While also using geothermal, hydropower makes up a very high share of Iceland’s electricity generation.

Mozambique – The majority of Mozambique’s electricity is generated from hydropower.

Brazil – Around 80% of Brazil’s electricity comes from hydropower, making it one of the largest and most hydro-dependent major economies.

Quebec ranks among the very top regions in the world for the share of electricity generated from hydropower. In recent years, hydropower has accounted for approximately 94–96% of Quebec’s electricity production, with some sources citing figures as high as 98.5% depending on the year and data set. This makes Quebec one of the most hydro-dependent major grids globally.

In a global context, only a handful of countries—such as Norway and Paraguay—regularly achieve a higher or comparable percentage of electricity from hydropower. Iceland also ranks above Quebec, though it relies heavily on both hydropower and geothermal energy. Most other large hydro-producing regions, including Canadian provinces like British Columbia and Manitoba, fall slightly below Quebec’s level of hydro reliance.

Therefore, Quebec would rank within the top five globally—and possibly as high as third or fourth—among jurisdictions for the percentage of total electricity generated from hydropower, surpassed only by nations like Norway and Paraguay where nearly 100% of electricity comes from hydropower.

Let's seize Quebec's hydro generation. They can keep the rest.

Norway’s EVs are powered by hydropower. You know who sells the most natural into Europe. Norway does. Europe substituted Russian gas with Norway’s. Putin screwed Russia by invading Ukraine. They cannot sell their gas anywhere, except for some piffling amounts of LNG. Russian clowns never built much LNG export stations, because they sold Europe directly by pipelines.

Russian gas was sold to Europe at the equivalent of $30 barrel oil. No wonder that world famous German industry/industrialists loved Putin so much. More than any Putin acolytes here.

Norway still produces and exports huge amounts of oil and natural gas to Europe, earning them a lot of money.
Norway is the fourth biggest exporter of natural gas on the planet.
Oil and gas exports make so much money for Norway, they have the world's biggest sovereign fund at over $2 Trillion in value), with most of the money in there coming from oil/gas exports.

We don’t need it.
Plenty of oil in Alaska and Trump is working hard to get it exploited quickly.

From the article:

“The Tesla CEO spent nearly $300 million to help re-elect U.S. President Donald Trump, and has since led an initiative for the Trump administration to slash federal agencies. Protests erupted at Tesla dealerships across Europe in response.”

Since when did Europeans give a fat rat’s behind about Americans? Any casual interaction with them gives you quite the impression they look down on us. Trump’s not their president nor is DOGE auditing their governmental agencies.

Norway currently leads the world in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with recent data showing that around 95%–97% of all new cars sold are fully electric. In early 2025, Norway achieved a 95.8% share of new car registrations being battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in January, and 94.7% in February. By April 2025, BEVs made up 97% of all new car registrations, with plugin vehicles overall reaching 97.4%. Monthly figures have occasionally peaked as high as 98%, and the annual share for 2024 was nearly 90% for fully electric cars, with the most recent year-to-date figure standing at 92.7%.

Norway’s success is driven by a combination of strong government incentives, high taxes on fossil-fuel vehicles, a mature charging infrastructure, and consistent policy support. The country is on track to reach its target of 100% zero-emission new car sales by 2025.

Plus plenty of outfits like hotels offer free EV charging.
That helps people switch over to EV’s too.

Gasoline is $7.50/gallon in Norway. There is a small but committed Mopar classic muscle car community there (1960s Chargers, Cudas, Cahllengers, etc.) but they cannot afford to take their cars out as often as they’d like.

China has little oil production to convert into gasoline and diesel. But they have plenty of coal to burn to power their pint sized and Yugo sized EVs. They also are the major Australian coal importer.

Norway = The good twin who runs hydropowered EVs
China = The evil twin who runs coal powered EV’s. Polluting the planet with evil CO2.

I just read that Norway has a Fixed flat-rate electricity cost for many households. That is a big incentive to switch to electric. Otherwise, 12 cents per KwH

So I suppose in Norway the hydro-electricity makes EVs more afjordable?

But China dominates in solar power and solar cells production.
In the near future, solar is going to dominate energy production on earth, not oil or natural gas or hydro.
China produces more solar power than the rest of the world combines.
And China totally dominates in EV total sales, vastly more than the US or Europe.

Good point. But I'm starting to get the feeling that "Drill baby, drill" is the same as "Epstein files released on day one".
