..., Lake Chatuge is more than a scenic retreat. It serves as a crucial source of flood control, hydroelectric power, drinking water for Hiawassee — and, just as importantly, it fuels the local economy.
Towns County in Georgia has a population of roughly 12,000, a number that swells each summer as tourists flock to the lake and mountain trails. Since 2021, visitors have spent between $90 million and $100 million annually in the area, generating about $6 million each year in state and local taxes, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
“That helps keep our property taxes lower,” said Julie Payne, president of the Lake Chatuge Chamber of Commerce..

SPIT.
What in the world are you blathering about? A dam needs to be repaired. They don’t last forever. It takes a while to do it. Not everything is a commie plot.
Dams need repairing. Just ask the residents of Johnstown PA. Oh wait. They are not available for comment
Stereotypes exist for a reason, and some just can’t help themselves.
Salton Sea East?
Spend more money.
Fix the Dam.
It will be betterer.
once down the lake is gone commies WILL sue to keep it gone..and that dam will never be repaired or replaced, the econatzi lawfare will see to that.
and in case you guys haven't noticed the commies are overflowing in every part of our society, culture, economy, schools and government , yes conspiring.
Unless GA is significantly different from most of the other states, Ms. Payne’s assertion on keeping property taxes lower isn’t true. Taxes from tourism are mostly sales taxes & fuel taxes that do not fund the same government functions as the property taxes do. Sure, there are properties owned by outsiders, such as a cabin at the lake, but the vast majority of taxes from tourism are based on spending by outsiders on goods & fuel.
Taxes are mostly, (not entirely) fungible.
Of course, more taxes are always spent.
Dude, i know its early in the day, but i suggest you have a drink. Dams get repaired all the time. Would you suggest they just wait till it fails?
“...properties owned by outsiders, such as a cabin at the lake,”
Most of the dwellings I have seen in Georgia are not what I would call “cabins”. Most are million dollar + McMansions built on lots where the starting price for vacant lots is north of $300,000.
REPAIRED?
THEY ARE DISCUSSING TOTAL REMOVAL OF 2 DAMS
NO DISCUSSION OF REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT
Clearly you didn’t read the article. They are REPAIRING the dam, and it will take 8 years (which seems long)
GA isn’t CA. In CA, what you say would most certainly be true.
