Germany threatens steps against Israel as tone shifts over Gaza

Summary

TURKU, Finland/BERLIN, May 27 (Reuters) - Germany's foreign minister threatened unspecified measures against Israel on Tuesday and said Berlin would not export weapons used to break humanitarian law, as he and Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered their most severe rebuke yet over Gaza.

Germany, along with the United States, had long remained in support of Israel's conduct since the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas, even as Israel became increasingly isolated internationally. Its about-turn comes as the European Union is reviewing its Israel policy and Britain, France and Canada also threatened "concrete actions" over Gaza.

Speaking to broadcaster WDR, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned Germany's historic support for Israel must not be instrumentalised, as massive air strikes and shortages of food and medicines had made the situation in Gaza "unbearable".

Earlier, Merz criticised air strikes on Gaza as no longer justified by the need to fight Hamas and "no longer comprehensible", in comments at a press conference in Finland.

While not a complete rupture, the shift in tone is significant in a country whose leadership follows a policy of special responsibility for Israel, known as the Staatsraeson, due to the legacy of the Nazi Holocaust.

It also reflects a broader shift in German public opinion.

"Our committed fight against anti-Semitism and our full support for the right to exist and the security of the state of Israel must not be instrumentalised for the conflict and the warfare currently being waged in the Gaza Strip," Wadephul said.

"We are now at a point where we have to think very carefully about what further steps to take," he said, without...

Amazing since Germany just announced it would send weaponry to Ukraine that could be used to bomb Russia.
Why the hate for Israel?

“Why the hate for Israel?”

Because most Germans - and Euroweenies - hate the Jews? Because, in their hearts, they’d be glad if every Jew was killed “From The River To The Sea”.

They don’t like Christians, either...not the ones who genuinely believe in Jesus.

I can understand, with many of these nations filled with Muslims, that supporting Jews is politically difficult. I think it’s hard to watch war, and its consequences against many that did not want war. However, when it comes to the people that supported what happened Oct 7th, I don’t feel anything to those that started it. Much like I have no emotion for the NAZI’s or those Japanese responsible for the South Pacific tragedies in WWII.

Germany has much more pressing problems, right now. Are they trying to appease their growing Muslim population?

Germans against the Jews again? Germany has been around as long as Oregon. Born the same year.

The damage they’ve done in their short life is pretty massive.

I want to point out that this piece is an example of the “dark forebodings” school of what used to be called “journalism.”

Germany threatens this... Trump promises that... Consumer sentiment is down (or up, or whatever)... Deficit will be this or that over the next ten years.

This stuff isn’t news even though it is advanced by Reuters. It is narrative engineering.

Nothing but distractions as the German people have been invaded and their economy is tanking.

Scratch a German, find a Nazi. Antisemitism is rearing its ugly head again in Germany. They’ve been waiting for an opportunity to weasel out of all their guilt-tripping.

Germans against the Jews again?

Germany has a large anti-Semitic Muslim population now. Thanks partially to Jews.

As I've posted before, in the mid-1990s the newly reunified Germany passed restrictions on Muslim Turkish immigration.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center issued an alarm, announcing that Germany was reverting to its racist, Nazi past. (I heard about the Wiesenthal Center's statement on KABC-AM, but I'm guessing other Jewish groups joined in.)

Germany quickly reversed course and re-opened Muslim immigration, eager to prove to the world, and to Jews in particular, that they were no longer racist.

So I wouldn't entirely blame the Germans for their current stance. Some blame goes to Muslims in Germany. And some blame goes to Jews for helping bring Muslims into Germany (and to Europe).

Bring it! The days of Jewish passivity are over.
