Trump’s FCC delays multilingual emergency alerts for natural disasters, sparking concern in L.A.

California Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán urged the Federal Communications Commission on Monday to follow through on plans to modernize the federal emergency alert system and provide multilingual alerts in natural disasters for residents who speak a language other than English at home.

The call comes nearly five months after deadly fires in Los Angeles threatened communities with a high proportion of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders — some with limited English proficiency — highlighting the need for multilingual alerts.

In a letter sent to Brendan Carr, the Republican chair of the FCC, Barragán (D-San Pedro) expressed “deep concern” that the FCC under the Trump administration has delayed enabling multilingual Wireless Emergency Alerts for severe natural disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis.

“This is about saving lives,” Barragán said in an interview with The Times. “You’ve got about 68 million Americans that use a language other than English and everybody should have the ability to to understand these emergency alerts. We shouldn’t be looking at any politicization of alerts — certainly not because someone’s an immigrant or they don’t know English.”

Multilingual emergency alerts should be in place across the nation, Barragán said. But the January Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires served as a reminder that the need is particularly acute in Los Angeles.

Not only does L.A. have a significant risk of wildfires, flooding, mudslides, and earthquakes, but the sprawling region is home to a diverse immigrant population, some of whom have limited English proficiency.

“When you think about it, in California we have wildfires, we’re always on earthquake...”

And multilingual instruction booklets should be banned in the US aw well. Then we might actually get detailed booklets again in English.

As expected, the Democrats and the Media have conjured up the latest sob story.

Over the past 4 months we have read sob story after sob story.

Let us all encourage the conversative writers, who get paid to write opinion pieces, to write a piece about the sob stories.

“Learn to speak English. Or live with it. Or leave.“

Seems like a very good incentive to do so.

I would have thought Los Angeles already had bi-lingual emergency alerts.

When the movie Independence Day came out in 1996(?), the movie had PSA’s in Spanish telling the Mexicans to not shoot at the space craft.

Don’t you still have to prove you understand basic English to become naturalized? Emergency alerts use pretty basic language. Natural born citizens should have been taught it in childhood. Illegals aren’t required to know English, but any risk to them is on their own heads. Thus leaving legal immigrants who should be wanting, encouraged and trying to learn it (perhaps other than elderly family members too old to learn it, brought in via ‘family reunification’ ) or temporary visitors, who likely have fellow travelers who can translate. Thus not much of a problem. Do need to consider ways to reach deaf or blind English knowing folks with alerts.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-—I lived in So CALIF—Los Angeles—1964 to 1993.

IIRC-—VOTING SAMPLE BALLOTS AND BALLOTS WERE DONE IN 63 LANGUAGES & DIALECTS——THEN !!!

EXACTLY HOW MANY LANGUAGES DO THE POLITICIANS OF LOS ANGELES WANT THEIR “EMERGENCY ALERTS” TO BE PRESENTED IN ???

COULD TAKE MORE THAN A HOUR TO EVEN GET THRU THE MAIN ONES.

TIME TO REALIZE THAT BEING IN THE USA EQUALS SPEAKING & HEARING THINGS IN ENGLISH.

NOTHING ELSE.

CATERING TO THEM NEVER HELPS.

I get ticked off every time I go to vote. There’s ballots in only FIVE languages now, but I suspect it will be 8-10 by 2028.

Good grief, every time that I think that the LAT has the absolute nadir of journalism, their intrepid collection of studies major flunk outs manage to descend lower.

Oh well, when I’m feeling down, it’s always a treat to read one of their screeds and realize that no matter what one thinks about life at the moment, there is always that crowd to feel superior to.

Well, the last PAID bureaucrat never raised the alarm on dama sytem shortage, or hydrant failure. Throwing money at that would only create a NO ALERT SYSTEM? Common Sense 101.

Zero emergency alerts in languages other than English. No payments from taxpayers to support invaders. No assuming liability for foreigners if the message is wrong.

Let each message start with all the laws they're breaking. Let them use Google translate. If it's good enough for the globalists at Google, it's good enough for the invaders they aided and abetted.

Put the responsibility on the non-English speaking broadcasting stations. Why would a Spanish only speaker be watching or listening to an English only station?

Are there as many languages as there are genders?
