DOGE WATCH: GOP senators rail against staggering $4.7 trillion in untraceable Treasury payments
Fox News ^ | May 24, 2025 | Deirdre Heavey

Earlier this year, Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) uncovered $4.7 trillion in untraceable Treasury Department payments.

Prior to the discovery, Treasury Account Symbol (TAS) identification codes were optional for $4.7 trillion in Treasury Department payments, so they were often left blank and were untraceable. The field is now required to increase "insight into where the money is actually going," the Treasury Department and DOGE announced in February.

"Of the 1.5 billion payments that we send out every year, they are required to have a TAS, a Treasury Account Symbol. We discovered that more than one third of those payments did not have a TAS number," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government earlier this month.

Fox News Digital asked Republican senators on Capitol Hill to respond to the approximately 500,000 in untraceable payments made by the Treasury Department each year.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Missouri, called for an investigation into where those payments actually went.

"There's so much waste. There's so much fraud, There's so much abuse in our government," Schmitt told Fox News Digital. "I'm glad there was a laser-like focus on it. We ought to make many of those reforms permanent, but there probably ought to be some investigations here about where this money actually went. I mean this is taxpayer money. People work hard."

This statement right here pisses me off so much I can’t even begin to accurately describe the amount. How nonchalant of Schmidt. We “ought to” and “there probably ought to be” should have been “we damn well better”.

Any legislator that opens his mouth on this and then votes to spend another dime is just a pathetic liar and hypocrite.

This is not good enough! One person from each agency must be in charge of approving each expenditure with their signature. That way, if money is spent frivolously, their head will be on the chopping block.

Daily accountability and weekly, monthly and yearly.
audits of expenditures. All who are given money for projects must be able to account for every cent. They also must be audited personally. Where did these high ranking officials get all the millions that they have?

It doesn’t help that “one-time” spending packages, like Obama’s $1.2 trillion stimulus package is still budgeted every yera since 2009. Same with Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act funding.

Note he doesn’t mention ‘accountability’. These enablers in congress never want to talk about that.

It is almost unbelievable that Congress never creates a new budget but just adds a certain percent to the previous years budget. This is especially true considering that there were three greater than one trillion dollar emergency spending bills that somehow passed in 2008 and recently.

I don’t really cannot despise Congress enough.

where this money actually went

How about where it began?

Especially who initiated the request

This stuff just goes on year after year & they say “we ought to do something about it” Well, if someone is brave enough to actually initiate “doing something about it” & it doesn’t work out as expected, then that person will be the goat & no one of either party who could be blamed for it wants to be. I suspect this situation will continue until this country is completely & absolutely broke. As for myself, I am old enough that I MIGHT not live to see this.....or the Lord may return & solve all of mankind’s problems.

The correct term is “Looting the Treasury”. Washingtonites are professional thieves and embezzlers.

To not have many 10’s of treasury officials in custody and billions of dollars in property and accounts seized today because of this is a crime in itself. This is systemic fraud by definition and at the highest levels possible and by design, intended to defraud (ultimately) the American taxpayer. Treasonous...and should be punished as such. This makes Bernie Madoff look like Huckleberry Finn spinning hard-boiled eggs to scam money from other kids. Godspeed to the prosecutors of these crimes and zero mercy for the guilty.

"... approximately 500,000 in untraceable payments made by the Treasury Department each year."

Have everybody who worked in the Treasury Department last year meet with Mr. Waterboard until the answers are found. Start with Janet Yellen and work on down.
