A Mexican navy sailing ship on a global goodwill tour struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Saturday, snapping its three masts, killing two crew members and leaving some sailors dangling from harnesses high in the air waiting for help. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the 142-year-old bridge was spared major damage but at least 19 people aboard the ship needed medical treatment. Two of the four people who suffered serious injuries later died, Adams announced on social media early Sunday. The cause of the collision was under investigation.
Prayers for the injured and for those who died.

“The Mexican navy said in a post on the social platform X that the Cuauhtemoc was an academy training vessel. It said a total of 22 people were injured, 19 of whom needed medical treatment.” excerpt
Not a very good navy, but it has one.
Mexico has a Navy?? lol
Not anymore.
Utter and complete incompetence.
When the bridge was built, ships had to strike their top masts to pass under it. U.S. Navy ships in the 20th Century had two size restrictions: They had to be narrow enough to pass through the Panama Canal, and low enough (with masts struck) to pass under the Brooklyn Bridge (to get to the Brooklyn Navy Yard).
I watched the Tall Ships Parade on July 4, 1976 from the 19th floor of the World Trade Center. They deliberately had the parade on the Hudson, not the East River, so that no ships had to strike their masts. There are no bridges over the Hudson from Manhattan.
Their adobe submarines all have screen doors. “We all live in adobe submarines! Adobe submarines, Adobe submarines.”
They might not have wanted to fly the Mexican flag so prominently.
They basically told us they steer sheep’s just like they drive.

There’s a tug along side, I assume it saw that the ship was too tall quite a bit before it crashed, because the tug captain sees ships all day long. I don’t get it.
I would think the Mexicans had to get permission to come into the port. Didn’t NY Port Authority get any details on the ship?
The ship hit stern first. The propulsion system may have been stuck in reverse when it left the pier..
“The ship hit stern first.”
Ah. I didn’t see that.
An anonymous source said the Mexican ship had paper license plates.
It had already passed under the bridge when it lost power and the current took it backwards into the low part of the bridge.
Looks like the Mexican Navy has a new captain’s vacancy.
