WASHINGTON (AP) — Days before Republicans unveiled their sweeping tax cut plan, the chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee had one last person to consult. He went to the White House, where he and President Donald Trump went over the legislation “line by line.”
“He was very happy with what we’re delivering,” said Rep. Jason Smith, a Republican from Missouri.
Trump had every reason to be pleased. His imprint is all over on the bill making its way through the House, starting with its title — the “ One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
The legislation realizes many of Trump’s campaign promises, temporarily ending taxes on overtime and tips for many workers, creating a new $10,000 tax break on auto loan interest for American-made cars, and even creating a new tax-free “MAGA account” — a nod to his ”Make America Great Again” movement, but in this case, it means “Money Accounts for Growth and Advancement.” This would contribute $1,000 to children born in his second term.
The Trump-inspired contours of the legislative package, months if not years in the making, reflect not only the president’s considerable influence over the Republican Party, but also the hard political realities in the House, where Republicans have only the barest of majorities and often find it difficult to find consensus without Trump’s involvement.

Who could be against that?
“Who could be against that?”
It isn’t that they are against...it’s Trump. And that’s on anything he is doing.
I’ve heard the saying if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I look at this situation and say it’s broke, the liberals and CS lying conservatives broke it. It’s going into complete meltdown. So what do they have to lose with the new way to do it? What they got ain’t working.

I’m not a big fan of these types of ‘giveaways’ like the $10K they handed out for new home buyers a while back, cash for clunkers etc. The programs will be wildly abused by foreign nationals, no question, and it just isn’t fair for the government to take money from some people and just hand it out to others.
We supported DOGE because we want to see a reduction in spending. We expect spending to go down or at least stay the same.
I am. Why are poor working slobs slaving away for Uncle Sam to make them fund accounts for the children of the wealthy?
Redistribution is an ugly thing.
You are exactly right. They are political theater and they make for very poor policy.
Why does some exempt employee who routinely works overtime need to pay taxes on all their income, but those eligible for overtime, who usually already get something like time and a half anyway, don’t have to pay taxes for any hours over 40?
What’s the deal with tipped income? In NYC high-end waiters make six figures, with probably 80% of it in tips—and they don’t have to pay income on that?
The answer of course is that those were campaign promises to assure that Trump brought home Nevada, for example. But the role of Congress is to rein that stuff in.
