Everyone could see that the Russian delegation in Istanbul was of a very low level. None of them were people who actually make decisions in Russia. Still, I sent our team, led by Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, to at least find out whether those Russians could actually decide anything

Our number-one priority is a full, unconditional, and honest ceasefire. This must happen immediately to stop the killing and create a solid basis for diplomacy.

If the Russian representatives in Istanbul couldn’t even agree to that first, obviously necessary step — then it will be 100% clear that Putin continues to undermine diplomacy. If that’s not the case, there must be at least some result today, starting with a ceasefire. The Ukrainian delegation has a mandate to make decisions.

As we saw yesterday, Russia sent almost the same people it sent in 2022. This showed that Russia hasn’t changed its basic approach – they make many statements, many threats, but solve nothing

They were doing everything they could to turn the Istanbul meeting into a staged, empty process – just like the ones in 2022. It’s not us or Western leaders who are disrupting the negotiations, as the Russians have been claiming for years – it’s Russians who send empty heads to the talks, and that’s what destroys the meaning of diplomacy

If that was a Russian proposal, it would represent a concession.

Withdrawal of those forces as a condition of ceasefire is a step down from requiring as a condition of ceasefire that there be no military resupply. It is a significant concession.

We're witnessing where governments "leaders" are underlings, puppets on strings, regardless of their titles.

It's easy to look at a small, impoverished country and say "That leader isn't calling the shots." but near impossible to accept that it's true in all countries.

It's a compulsory meeting for propaganda purposes for the Russians. They will now tell the Russian masses that they are negotiating to end the war of aggression which they started, and can end anytime by withdrawing from Ukraine. Zelenski had to send a delegation to keep Trump happy. Everyone knew this would go nowhere.

Tell me, Mr. Russian, how many Russian soldiers would have to die in the future to get all of the four regions?

Maybe 200,000, maybe more, maybe less.

How many pro-Moscow Russian ethnics normally resided in the territory at issue?

Probably less.

Going nowhere is the key.

What is so fascinating about this is that the so-called information war is presented in the media, as if the real war. Salvos of words against opposing salvos of words.

Stepping away from the partisan perspectives, it is clearly a land war in Eastern Ukraine, and both actively warring parties are not members of NATO. One finds arguments aplenty about the history, but that too is so much 'words.' Thinking a shooting war can be won with public relations seems so "modern." Most likely old-fashioned brutality will be the deciding factor.

A demonstration of "Europe" in this last week or so was Starmer, Macron, Merz and Tusk all traveling via train to Kiev to have a joint phone call to President Trump, which is about as "photo op" as one can imagine.

But reviewing Macron from a year ago, France was considering entering the land war with troops as "not off the table." And months back Starmer was going to "lead." And most recently in the Bundestag Merz cheered building a new German "largest military in Europe." All which may -- but likely will not -- happen, but long in the future... Meanwhile the wars --- shooting and "information" -- will go along.

It most probably comes down to which "side" will be left standing over time, which side can manufacture the most war materiel and field the most young men to kill other young men in battle.
