Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday said a meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladmir Putin is the only way to end the war in Ukraine.
Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser, said Trump has grown impatient and wants the three-year war to end, according to The Hill.
"The only way to have a breakthrough between President Trump and Putin," Rubio told reporters, adding that nothing productive will happen until the two sides engage.
Trump said he wasn't surprised Putin did not want to attend the talks, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pushing him to join.
"I actually said, 'Why would he go if I'm not going?'" Trump said in Qatar. "I would go, but I wasn't planning to go, and I said, 'I don't think he's going to go if I don't go."
Rubio said Trump remains open to meeting with Putin, The Hill reported.

Trump should put the screws to Putin. Until he begs. Then they can carve up Ukraine.
But in the mean time, the people of Russia will suffer economically. And that is OK.
Is this another libertarian fever dream?
Putin does not want to end the war, but rather expand it. Its the Russian way.
Doesn’t bother me either but I don’t like to see children suffer.
“Rubio: Trump-Putin Meeting Is Only Way to End War”
I call BS!
What would make Trump blink first?
Nah…I just like seeing Russians suffer. It seems you guys like that.
It’s easy to get the kids fed and warm.
Egos get in the way.
Yes, President Trump should insist that for every one Uke Nazi Slave the Russians get, America gets two, that’s only fair.
YES—Trump and Putin need to meet. Only then can peace even standd a chance.
Well, we do need to get rid of the problem of Nazi Ukraine, and that would do it.
On who? Rubio or Trump?
Why should President Trump have to be there when no other U.S. President has been directly involved in peace negotiations or treaties ending any of the wars this country has been involved in, and especially the war in Ukraine that saw no U.S. troops on the ground in that country? There is no precedent for this at all.
If you ever met a Russian I bet you'd faint.
So be it humbly yours!
When did any other US President take a direct part in peace negotiations in a war that no U.S. troops fought in?
Trump will be consumed by the budget futility underway.
He will not be receptive to more requests for money as he sees what the crushing numbers are.
Putin . . . almost certainly will become aware of this via whatever channel. At which point any meetings — that Trump will simply not have time for — are postponed.
And the war continues with whoever you think is winning, continuing to win.
Why does anyone think getting Trump and Putin across the table from each other will end this?
Have they ever heard of irreconcilable differences?
That’s what Russia and Ukraine have.
However, the US and Russia DO NOT have irreconcilable differences.
The fastest route to ending this war is to abandon Ukraine.
And that’s the furtherance of US interests.
