Prices climbed at an unexpectedly slow pace last month, offering a boost to President Donald Trump, whose aggressive trade policies have sparked fears of a resurgence in inflation.
The Labor Department on Tuesday reported that prices rose at an annual rate of 2.3 percent, the smallest increase since early 2021. While price growth in so-called core sectors of the economy — which exclude volatile food and energy costs — remained elevated at 2.8 percent, April’s Consumer Price Index contained only scant evidence that Trump’s tariffs have meaningfully driven up the cost of living.
There was broad anticipation that Trump’s levies on Chinese imports, steel and aluminum and certain Canadian and Mexican products had caused prices for apparel, electronics and other consumer goods to spike. If anything, the opposite occurred: The cost of clothing and new cars — two areas that were highly exposed to Trump’s initial levies — both fell.
Politico! Should be Bull#*&tico.
Bull#*&tico is mad because all the USAID $$$ have dried up. The Hussein/Biden Regime had funneled beaucoup $$$ to Bull#*&tico by purchasing many, many prescriptions to it. No doubt there were many 10% rewards kicked back to Hussein, Pelousy, ET AL.
on network news i heard one comment that while tariffs were supposedly driving up most prices, reductions in energy prices were offsetting those price increases (i am not saying this is necessarily true).
Perhaps there’s a fear that if you increase you price due a tariff of a specified percentage, people will be able to calculate how little your cost is.
awwwwwwww poor commies, they wanted SO damn badly to have a recession so they could blame Trump, poor loaves
The experts predicted Tarrifs would destroy the place.
Asking for a friend, at what point do the experts stop being expert?
The predictors of doom were just stupid - including the FR people that bemoaned the tariffs.
Inflation that actually harms people is stuff like homeowners insurance going up $1000 per year, school tuition, car prices even made in USA.
Milk, bacon, lettuce, and other fresh and grocery items are domestic and doesn’t get tariffed. And, if capers and french wine costs more, or a Chiese can opener is $5 instead of $4, so what? Oh, my Chinese T shirts went up a dollar each.
The point nobody acknowledges is that, unlike a tax, you can decide not to buy an item that is subject to tariffs.
That is correct. Tariffs may suppress purchases, but they are not inflationary, so the effect is muted.
Much gnashing of teeth.
I can give an exact date for that...The day Trump came down the escalator and announced...6/16/2015. They all got it wrong from that point forward.
The Recession will Not be Televised.
Wait, so the media made errors that made Trump look worse than he is? Gosh, that must be the first time that has ever happened.
They will hurt if Trump does not negotiate the deals that the market is expecting. Right now, the worst tariffs have been delayed.
What Politico really wanted to say was “Darn!”
EC
I detect the feint whiff of bullshit.
Gas in Myrtle Beach was $2.61 yesterday. Before the election it was $3.35.
And there is a s**t load of them here.
My source for eggs showed a marked reduction this past week.
“The predictors of doom were just stupid - including the FR people that bemoaned the tariffs.”
With all pearl-clutchers constantly whining, FR is starting to resemble neurotic DU.
