On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) argued that imposing government price controls on prescription drugs will lead to shortages and this is what happens in Europe.
Paul said, [relevant remarks begin around 5:25] “The thing is, is if you want prices to be low and you say the government should just make them fair or low, Venezuela’s got a great example of this, and there they’ve had price controls on everything. But you know what? They don’t have anything. Price controls lead to shortages. And so, in the European countries that have price controls, they’re lower because the government mandates that the price can’t be the market price. And so, they do get a better deal, but they do it by force and by mandate. But what you end up having is a regulated market. So, if you want the fat shot, you’ve got to go to the government doctor. You may get it, you may not get it, but you don’t go and just get the medicine you want if a doctor will prescribe it, you have to get permission from the government. They’ll make you take the cheaper variety for a couple of years. If you need a heart surgery, you may be dead by the time you get it. That’s the European system, that’s socialism, and I want no part of it. I don’t like high prices, but I think there are ways to bring prices down.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Just charge the same price to everyone. That is the only control.
Exactly. Trump isn’t proposing price controls. They can charge what they like, as long as it’s the same as what they give to their best customer.
I don't know if I yet fully understand what the admin is doing. It's like they are saying: you can choose your prices or to sell or not sell anywhere, but you must sell at you lowest price here or don't sell here.
The more Rand talks about economic issues the more retarded he sounds.
bottom line is the govt run healthcare countries
refuse to pay for research and development
so the US is footing the bill
everyone should share that burden
What he says about government in Europe is true today about insurance companies in the US. They may approve a medicine or they may not; or they may require you to take a generic until proven that it doesn’t work as well or has hard side effects. While he is right in principle that price controls bring shortages, it is also true that we have not had a free market in healthcare for a very long time anyway.
The pharmaceutical reps who supply md offices make a s ton of money. This was always the case going back to the ‘90s at least. Company car.
The U.S. is getting ripped off by big pharma, and it must stop.
How much is Randy getting from BigPharma?
I need to revisit that list of Senators making bank.
Rand Paul always has some stupid point
The Europeans have socialized medicine. Different system.
Here’s another thingg Europeans do. They eat real food. We eat msg, corn syrup, dyes, simple carbs, processed meat
The euros eat food. We drink chemical infused everything
The euros don’t live on coke or any corn syrup infused crap
They don’t eat the sugar we eat. They don’t eat near the salt
And they do not walk around fat. We are fat
The "most favored nation" pricing model in President Trump's pharmaceutical price plan, as outlined in the May 12, 2025 executive order, ties U.S. prescription drug prices to the lowest prices paid by other developed countries for the same drugs.
Specifically, it directs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to identify the lowest price charged in a comparable developed nation (e.g., OECD countries like Canada, Japan, or European nations) and set U.S. prices for Medicare, Medicaid, and potentially private insurance at or below that level.
This approach aims to eliminate the U.S. paying significantly higher prices—often 2-4 times more—than other countries for identical medications, effectively forcing drugmakers to offer the U.S. their best global price or face further regulatory measures like imposed pricing, drug importation, or export restrictions.

Does he have a solution, aside from allowing the world to siphon off US wealth?
Perfect libertarianism is an impossibility, because everything naturally slides to the lowest denominator. The Founding Fathers knew this.
What Trump is doing is allowing the drug companies to charge whatever they want, but not allow them to unduly profit off the American consumer and allowing the rest of the world to buy the drugs at cost.
It’s amazing that people in Congress and around the world still don’t get it.
“We’ll have shortages!”
“He doesn’t have the authority!”
“Only Congress can enact this!”
For the zillionth time Trump is forcing the other side’s hand. Congress you vote against lowering drug prices despite years of promises to do so you might as well retire because you’re not getting re-elected.
There's a big difference in the economies between wealthy nations and poor ones. If you're going to take that approach, poor countries will always have older, less effective, less sophisticated medicines. You could not offer the newest medicines to poor countries and expect that they would be able to pay the same price as the US or Japan.
The more Rand talks about economic issues the more ridiculous he sounds.
Don’t let him fool you with doctor crap. Doctors are famous for not understanding again and financing
A lot of people that are prescribed particular blood thinners cannot afford the out of pocket cost. If they’re on Medicaid forget it. Then they have a stroke. Medicaid then has to pay 2 days- 3 weeks in the icu That’s 2-5g per day just for the bed
No one is looking at that. Definitely not doctors
“Here uh go home and uh take these pills’
‘Uh ok doc. What if I have to pay rent or, like, eat?’
“Huh? Wha? Don’t you know I’m a doctor? I’m busy”
....mebe if pharma spent less on buying congress critters and flooding legacy fake news with expensive pointless commercials they could lower the wholesale price of prescription drugs,,,
Rand has become a great disappointment to me. What he doesn’t understand is that Americans are shouldering the cost of pharmaceuticals for the entire world. This is how ideologues go wrong. You have to play the game with the rules that are handed to you.
