California voters have sharply differing views over two of the state’s most prominent Democrats, according to a new poll.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who is expected to decide by the end of the summer whether she runs for California governor in 2026, has near universal name recognition among California voters, and 50% view her favorably, according to a survey by UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies that was co-sponsored by The Times.
***Harris, despite losing the presidential election to Donald Trump in 2024, is faring better than Bass among California voters as she weighs a gubernatorial bid next year to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who cannot run for the seat again because of term limits.
Roughly 96% of California voters know enough about Harris to have an opinion about her, according to the poll. That’s a stratospheric level of name identification in an enormous state where lesser-known candidates must spend tens of millions of dollars in hopes of raising their profile.
Voters’ views of Harris, a former U.S. senator, state attorney general and San Francisco district attorney, are split, with 50% having a positive image of the Bay Area native, compared with 46% holding a negative impression, according to the poll. She drew stronger support from voters who tend to cast ballots more frequently in statewide elections — women, younger and older voters, and residents of the Bay Area and Los Angeles County.
Voters’ views of Harris varied dramatically over the past 15 years. She barely won the state attorney general’s race in 2010 and was unknown by a large segment of voters, DiCamillo said. By the time Harris ran for the U.S. Senate in 2016, she was viewed favorably by the state’s voters, though many did not know enough about her to offer an opinion.

Karen Bass, the fire queen, is hardly the litmus test. Sounds like a push poll for Kneepads Harris.
If Kamala Harris still has some favorability, its because she has literally never been responsible for anything in her entire public career.
Merely repeating stupid slogans constantly works for a majority of Democrats.
This state can burn to the ground and they still dont learn their damn lesson, its too far gone to be saved unfortunately and I like Steve Hilton but he’s wasting his time

the D party brass would be tremendously better off selecting at least competent people (and with a whole lot less “baggage’)
out in Californication, they have lots of movie actors...SOME of whom (a few anyway) haven’t made fools of themselves by blathering about matters political they have no idea about
the D party could do a whole lot better! But since they have the California ballot rigged (sometimes the races there are between TWO commie/leftist D’s and NO R at all)
and they have the ballot counting under very tight control (with thousands of ballots never getting counted at all)
and they have plenty of judicial hacks that will rubber-stamp even the most obviously rigged election
so... what to do? it is so very much in Calif like it was under Stalin in USSR, or under Fidel in Cuba, or like under the communist Chinese regime

She didn’t win. Cooley did. The Cheat Machine swung into action and as usual, she won in overtime.
Kamala Harris is a raging idiot. I don’t know what’s lookin’ good. She probably be going up against Cochise Ocasio.
I don’t think Bass is one of the most prominent Democrats in the state. I question whether Harris would be worse than Newsom.
We lived in CA decades ago, always at the beach, both in Santa Monica and Marina del Rey. My kids had a wonderful time, could even go out at night for parties on the beach in their early teens. Good grade schools and Santa Monica High was excellent.
I worked downtown and even when I worked overtime, I was safe walking a few blocks to my parking lot after dark. Today, if we did those things, we’d all be maimed or dead. The situation there now is totally inexcusable.
WHY DID THOSE IDIOTS LET THIS HAPPEN?
There is no lower bound to Democrat politicians and Democrats voters.
Harris would find new ways to be worse than Newsome. Is he a drunk?
Newsom is very alert, active, and he gets stuff done.
I don't think Kamala Harris would get as much done as he does, and if she drinks it would be less.
The only thing she ever accomplished as AG of California was to attack the elderly.
