Labour crackdown on immigration with new powers to deport foreign nationals convicted of any crime as Keir Starmer responds to growing threat posed by Nigel Farage's Reform UK

Migrants could be kicked out of the country if they commit any crime under a planned government crackdown.

Currently, foreign criminals are only reported to the Home Office if they receive a jail sentence – and only those given a year behind bars are usually considered for deportation.

But Labour is set to rip up those rules as it tries to get a grip on immigration and see off the growing threat posed by Nigel Farage's rampant Reform UK party.

Under Home Secretary Yvette Cooper's plans, the Home Office will be told of all foreign nationals convicted of any offence, while officials will be given wider powers to remove them from the UK.

The move intends to close the loophole which means migrants can carry out knife crimes, thefts, criminal damage and violence against women without facing the risk of deportation.

It is set to be included in the long-awaited White Paper on immigration being published tomorrow, and comes after a battle within the Government over migration levels in the face of Mr Farage's electoral surge. One poll published yesterday put the anti-immigration party ten points ahead of Labour.

Ms Cooper has led calls for her party to adopt radical policies to address growing public disquiet about the level of immigration, which contributed to Labour's lacklustre performance in this month's local elections.

But Mr Farage was dismissive of her plan to get tougher on foreign criminals, telling The Mail on Sunday last night: 'This is a promise that we keep hearing from our governments. They never deliver.'

Does that include entering the country illegally? I’ll bet it doesn’t.

So cross the Channel in a raft and then stay out of trouble, and you can enjoy a lifetime on the dole. Same goes for your family and all your friends.

Wait a minute. So UK criminal illegals just face the risk of deportation. In other words, they just might possibly, could be deported. But then again, maybe not.

It’s another Potemkin Village. Looks good from the outside. But there’s really nothing there.
