The new pope, the old pope, Trump and … Rush Limbaugh

So the world’s got a new pope.

Because Catholicism is the largest Christian denomination in the United States – and perhaps the world – and because Catholics live in almost every nation, and certainly on every continent, the world can claim Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, as “the world’s pope,” as I’ve already heard on the news.

From what I can tell, so far, he’s a lot like the old pope, Pope Francis.

This is frightening.

The new pope is billed in the press as a U.S. American, but he’s legally a citizen of Peru, where he spent most of his ministerial life.

In his long ministry, Pope Leo served as a priest in Peru, frequently dealing with social issues and challenging national leaders. From what I can tell – you may notice me saying this a lot, as the jury’s still out on our new Pope Leo – he is, politically, a lot like Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope.

Why? Because both men seem to advocate for a kind of revolutionary theology. For instance, Pope Francis said, fairly late in his life: “If I see the Gospel in a sociological way only, yes, I am a communist, and so too is Jesus.”

I doubt that more than a vanishingly-small number of America’s sixty-two million Catholic adult believers – twenty percent of our entire adult population – like to think of Jesus as a communist. As a believer in Christ, but not so much the pope, I admit to having taken umbrage at the notion that a pope – or, for that matter, any Christian – chooses to see Christ as a communist.

As an aside, only three other nations have more Catholics than the U.S.: Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

How can Pope Leo be like Francis in his economic orientation when according to Charlie Kirk’s ( Founder of Turning Point USA ), who pulled his voting record, he’s a registered Republican who voted in the Republican primaries when he is in the USA?

Voting in the Republican primaries could be a Dim doing his version of Operation Chaos.

Seeing a lot of “papal panic porn” from some voices on the right over the last 24 hours.

First of all, if Prevost wanted to be “Francis II,” he could have literally named himself just that.

If Prevost wanted to signal that Bergoglio was a his model, he could have eschewed wearing the mozzetta like the latter did.

The fact that Cardinal Burke (basically the living patron saint of conservative American Catholics) met with Prevost before the conclave and likely supported him allays my fears.

I know longer want to hear the church’s opinions on anything. I have my faith from my youth and it worked. The Pope can spew anything it wants. It’s broken and will never be the same.

Out with the old pope, in with the old pope. Nothing will change with the Catholic church now that the regressive Left are in charge and Satan is in command.

We’ll keep watching. Hope for the best and prepare an option for our Vice President to meet with the Pope.

How about we give the new guy a couple of weeks before we throw him over? I don’t think anybody really has a good idea what type of pope he is going to be, himself inluded. So far he seems like he a smart kind person studied math, is good with foreign languages maybe has a bit clue of where American Catholics heads are at, on paper he seems like a good fit. I’m cautiously optimistic he’ll be much better that Francis

Me too. Getting his college degree in mathematics shows that he must have a brain capable of thinking logically. I am praying that he is not a Marxist.

Agree-having Catholic parents and family, my faith has always been part of me-during the plandemic, we were discussing faith at work-a protestant evangelical co-worker asked me how old I was when I found Jesus. I told him He had always been with me-I don’t remember exactly when I first was taught the Lord’s prayer or how to pray a rosary, either.

I did not like pope Francis at all, and I likely won’t like pope Leo if he has the same way of thinking-but the pope is not God and my faith does not depend on what the pope thinks/says-there have been several apostate popes in the past 1000 or so years-faith in God survives no matter what the pope does.

The Church needs to return to the teachings of Jesus-and the Bible-I really hope it does-I miss the Catholic teachings I grew up with...

It's too early to tell. All we can do is hope for the best. At least there are some signs he will be better than Francis.

Catholics are just shy of half of all Christians in the world. Of course it's harder to determine what percentage of Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox and other Christians are still believing and practicing their faith.

The name Leo is interesting. It includes some very important popes: Leo I (the Great), who talked Attila out of attacking Rome and sent his Tome to be read at the Council of Chalcedon. Leo III, who crowned Charlemagne Roman Emperor in 800. Leo IX, during whose pontificate the split with the Patriarch of Constantinople took place. Leo X, the pope when Martin Luther wrote his 95 theses.

But Cardinal Prevost may have been thinking mostly of the most recent Pope Leo, Leo XIII.

Except for his rabid support of Illegal Immigration!

Mitt Romney is like Francis. The rest answers itself.

“U.S. American, but he’s legally a citizen of Peru”
Dual citizenship...and not triple citizenship.

My wife born in Mexico and 2 of my 3 daughters born in the US have dual citizenship. It is really quite common.

I would think him being the head of a foreign country he has no claim on US citizenship. He cannot be loyal to the US and run a different country.
