Cameron Hamilton, who had been acting administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was fired Thursday, a day after telling Congress the agency should not be disbanded, putting him at odds with President Donald Trump's suggestions that FEMA be downsized or dissolved.
The change at the top of the agency that coordinates federal disaster relief comes a few weeks before the start of of hurricane season on June 1.
“Cameron Hamilton is no longer the Senior Official Performing the Duties of Administrator,” Julia Moline, the acting chief of staff, wrote in an email to all employees Thursday that was reviewed by ABC News.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Hamilton was called to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s office at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. He returned to the FEMA office a short time later and told staff he was fired, according to sources.
Speaking to the House Appropriations Committee on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Hamilton told lawmakers that FEMA should not be disbanded, putting him at odds with public comments from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that the agency has “failed” and should be “eliminated” or downsized.
“I do not believe it is in the best interests of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency,” he told lawmakers.
His comments came on the same day as Noem testified before the same committee.
“The president has indicated he wants to eliminate FEMA as it exists today, and to have states have more control over their emergency management response. He wants to empower local governments and support them and how they respond to their people,” Noem said.

There is someone who matters making bad recommendations. They need to go..today.
Yeah. Publicly disagreeing with your boss is smart.
well, cameron FAed and then he FOed ...
I respect him to say what’s in his mind today rather than saying he agreed with Trump but planned to contradict the president later on.
Do you have any idea how hard it must be to find people who aren’t Deep State, can’t be bought off or compromised by Deep State, who are willing to go against Deep State?
If people like Trump grew on trees, we wouldn’t be in this charlie foxtrot.
People need to be patient.
We’re in a war, and this one will NOT be won any time soon.
He owed Trump his resignation the first moment he realized he disagreed with Trump.
There is someone who matters making bad recommendations.

likely the Royal Couple who made all the bad picks last time. Son in law and daughter hiding in the background. Will continue to feed democrat-flavored recommendations to her dad.
“I do not believe it is in the best interest of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency,” Hamilton responded.
“Having said that I’m not in a position to make decisions and impact outcomes on whether or not a determination such as consequential as that should be made,” Hamilton added. “That is a conversation that should be had between the president of the United States and this governing body.”
I very much support abolishing FEMA.
States powers/states rights/10th amendment is about state control, nothing authorizes FEMA to exist.
It was created by illegal fiat. Congress did not even pass a law for FEMA that I can tell.
We must, MUST, honor our wonderful Constitution.
Especially when the feckless GOP wave white flags and run away
No way. Idiot to even disagree in public.
Looks like a defense of their salary.
Getting rid of FEMA is stupid, getting it back to it’s original mission and keeping it out of being deployed on small operations that are better handled by individual states would be smart.
I agree.
FEMA has done some good work over the years, but it has also done some very poor work. I think it needs to be fixed, rather than eliminated.
FEMA was created by Jimmy Carter executive order.
No, they can't be trusted. Any of these agencies that exceeded their authority needs to be disbanded. There is no room for low trust agencies in a high trust society.
Then you must be an Anarchist because you will always find someone who distrusts some part of the government. It begs the question, who decides what is trustful and what isn’t. You put 100 people in a room to answer the what and why and you’ll get 100 different answers. You’ll find a lot of people who distrust the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs but I doubt many of us here, want those government elements to go away.
Please make me the head of any agency you want downsized or eliminated. Ready for service in three days.
