Our Chicago Pope

He emerged on the balcony, smiling, to greet the tens of thousands of cheering, jubilant Catholics in St. Peter’s Square: the first American pope.

On Thursday afternoon—evening, in Rome—on a beautiful sunny day, Cardinal Robert Prevost from Chicago was elected the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He announced his new papal name: Pope Leo XIV.

Prevost, a 69-year-old from the Augustinian religious order, had been considered a moderate candidate with solid practical skills in dealing with Vatican politics but similar priorities to Pope Francis on the matters of immigrants and the poor. He has held somewhat more traditional attitudes on matters of women and LGBTQ rights and is expected to be more permissive toward the traditionalist faction in the church. On social media, some compared Prevost to the Stanley Tucci character, Cardinal Bellini, in the popular 2024 movie Conclave that’s haunted these proceedings online, but that’s not quite right—Bellini was brash, while Prevost has been described as being more cautious and pragmatic than Francis. More than anything, this election seems to be one of continuity, rather than a push further left or a swing to the right. In his opening address the new Pope spoke of the need for a church that “builds bridges” and will “receive everyone.” It was a clear signal that he intended to continue the approach that Francis brought to the papacy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Leo_XIII (Last Pope Leo was a extreme Liberal “Pope of the People”. From the article:

He is well known for his intellectualism and his attempts to define the position of the Catholic Church with regard to modern thinking. In his famous 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum, Pope Leo outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions, while affirming the rights to property and free enterprise, opposing both socialism and laissez-faire capitalism. With that encyclical, he became popularly titled as the “Social Pope” and the “Pope of the Workers”, also having created the foundations for modern thinking in the social doctrines of the Catholic Church, influencing the thoughts of his successors.

Hates deporting illegal invaders. I wonder if He/She/It will let 20 million undocumented including criminals and gangs into the Vatican to live there permanently?

“define the position of the Catholic Church with regard to modern thinking.”

He might try reading Hebrews 13:8.

I am saddened, but I guess not surprised, that so many are quick and eager to damn Pope Leo XIV.

As a Catholic, I suppose I am somewhat used to this idea. It makes me sad - truly - that the two greatest principles I hold: My Catholic faith (first and foremost) and my belief in capitalism and free markets are now considered... IDK... marks of evil or somehow “non-pure” in the conservative space.

My wife is far more observant than I am, but when we heard the word of the new Pope? She was so excited because we met him, long ago, as Father Prevost. He had given a sermon at our church, in support of an offering for a ministry. I only vaguely recall it - it was at least 25 (more?) years ago, but wife reminded me that I asked him to pray for Steve Trachsel and suggested that maybe God could convince Steve not to take 5 minutes between pitches.

But, I guess I see another pillar of my prior conservatism is being kicked away because no principles are allowed besides complete and unquestioned fealty to an individual.

Yep - lets see what happens. I think this will be like King Charles who everyone thought was going to be a horror show and he hasn't really done anything really terrible.

“receive everyone.”

Sounds good.

But can you "receive" them without fulfilling the desire of those seeking "reception" to have their abomination of a lifestyle validated.

The church must offer salvation from abomination NOT a validation of abomination.

Calling Leo XIII an “extreme liberal” is pretty funny. Maybe by comparison to Pius IX and Pius X (his immediate predecessor and successor respectively), but by today’s standards he was rock-ribbed reactionary conservative down to the bone.

Have you seen enough yet to form an opinion on the newest “Leo”?

NOT my “Chicago Pope”.

YOUR Chicago Pope.

Question: Can he be recalled? ;)

The people had no vote in the selection, so perhaps we can start a recall by the people?

NO?

Perhaps we can rent/borrow some of Soro’s protesters to go pretest the new pope at the Vatican?

I am definitely NOT Catholic, but I am interested in how his election will effect Conservative principles. How will he deal with Judaism and Israel. What are his thoughts about Muslim persecution and Chinese persecution? etc. With so many Catholics in the world, it is important to non Catholics as well as Catholics because they affect so many things.

I think he is the most conservative Pope we could have hoped for given that the vast majority of of the Cardinals were appointed by Pope Francis.

I don’t trust anybody from Chicago, further than I can spit. If the new Pope is from Chicago, it is all but guaranteed he is corrupt.

Nope. I’m going to give him plenty of opportunity to show me he’s better than I expect him to be. :-)

There's a parish is South Irving that exclusively has the Latin Mass. My wife and youngest son go there as often as possible. I'm warming up to it, but I've got a ways to go.

There are a couple of things I've noticed there: one, it's always packed, and usually pipe it into an overflow room; two, there's a lot of young families with multiple young children that attend Mass.

Parishioners are encouraged to dress modestly, and the women cover their heads.

IMO, Latin Mass is worthy of encouragement and support.
