An Oregon bill that would require big tech companies including Google and Meta to pay money to local newsrooms and journalists is steadily advancing despite protests from tech industry groups.

The latest version of Senate Bill 686 would require companies of Google’s magnitude to pay at least $104 million annually to Oregon newsrooms and journalism programs. Companies of Meta’s scope would pay at least $18 million. Alternatively, companies could choose to undergo an arbitration process to determine a different payment amount.

Lawmakers from both parties and numerous Oregon publishers have said the bill would be a financial lifeline for newsrooms across the state while requiring tech companies to compensate publishers for profiting off of their locally generated content.

Big tech vs. Big media. No one to cheer for in this game.

If a publisher doesn’t want Google, etc. to “steal” their content, just put that content behind a pay wall.

Simple, eh?

This falls under the ICC. Oregon has no right to control interstate commerce. Thats exactly what’s going on.

Used to be the richest guy in town owned the local newspaper. Got rich by selling advertising. Our local paper only prints three days a week. Half of the ad space is devoted to selling ad space in the paper. Today’s ‘Sunday paper’ (delivered on Saturday) is thinner that what a weekday paper was a decade ago.

He’s dead, Jim

It’s a great idea. This way, Oregon will have no industries of any kind in the state and it will evolve into the 96,000 square mile state park they want.

About 25% of the news stories on the front page of the Seattle Times are now written by "Endowed" local reporters.

They are reporters who cover climate, racism, the socialist agenda, immigration, etc.

They beat The Drum every day for Hard Left political issues, but they get paid by external non-profit political organizations.

I assume this same plan is in effect for dozens of other urban areas with slowly dying newspapers.

A financial lifeline all-right for Oregon it sounds like it’s tanking fast.

It’s how socialism works first your money goes then your clothes.

Next they’ll be panhandling with hub caps just to hear the change dropping.

“I think my response (to concerns) would be: That’s why we have the courts system,” said Senate Majority Leader Kayse Jama of Portland, who chairs the rules committee. “If it will be challenged in the court system, let’s let the court system decide.”

No, this person is clearly a moron. Once something is published in a paper it obviously enters the public domain and can be used in any manner a person chooses.

Any company that wants to avoid these punitive confiscations should move to Missouri.
