As delays continue to roil travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, United Airlines Inc.’s CEO announced plans to reduce its schedule.
Air traffic controller staffing issues have been at the center – combined with technology failures and a runway rehabilitation project – that led to a nightmare scenario over the last week for travelers.
The situation led United Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby to cancel 35 flights per day from the Newark schedule, beginning over the weekend.
“For many years, United has been very clear and vocal about the need to fix the Air Traffic Control system in EWR. While we enthusiastically support the efforts underway to permanently and structurally fix the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration], the long-simmering FAA challenges boiled over this week,” Kirby said in a May 2 statement.
“In the past few days, on more than one occasion, technology that FAA air traffic controllers rely on to manage the airplanes coming in and out of Newark failed – resulting in dozens of diverted flights, hundreds of delayed and canceled flights and worst of all, thousands of customers with disrupted travel plans.
“Unfortunately, the technology issues were compounded as over 20% of the FAA controllers for EWR walked off the job.”
Kirby noted that the air traffic control facility has been chronically understaffed for years. Without these controllers, he added it’s clear the airport cannot handle the number of planes scheduled to operate in the weeks and months ahead, which, of course, is peak travel season.
“It’s disappointing to make further cuts to an already reduced schedule at Newark, but since there is no way to resolve the near-term structural FAA staffing issues, we feel like there is no other choice in order to protect our customers,” said Kirby.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
“Forget it Jake, it’s Newark.”
It’s all good. Magic “Artificial Intelligence” is going to solve all these problems.
DEI turn out to be the disaster that we expected?
Maybe they should re-open Floyd Bennett and get United to move there. Or just go to Westchester County and add a parallel runway.
“And nothing of value was lost”
EWR is athe stinkiest turd in a cesspool of crap airports. the most disgusting airport I have ever been to. And I had to fly through twice a month international.
I agree that Newark is a horrible airport.

I cannot track down all of the flight reductions, but they look rather strategic.

When the FAA needs to give the commercial airport system an enema, Liberty International in Newark is where they stick the tube.
OK, so what do you think it means? Maybe I’m just dense today as I’m still trying to recover from vacation.
Something had to give. United took a proactive approach and canceled 35 daily round trips that would have less impact than constant delays and cancellations on more productive routes.
I cut my teeth flying in and out of EWR starting in the North Terminal days. I remember remember looking at the old tower and terminal. I saw the first bricks laid for terminal C. It is a $hit hole to fly out of , but it was my $hithole.
