President Trump appeared to acknowledge Wednesday that toy shortages are possible as his tariff hikes ripple through the economy.
The CEOs of Walmart, Target and Home Depot privately warned him last week about the likelihood of product shortages and price spikes.
"Somebody said, 'oh, the shelves are gonna be open,'" Trump told reporters Wednesday. "Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more."

The US doesn’t manufacture AOC Dolls?
“Barbies stacked like cordwood”
Probably best let the federal government decide what’s important to buy. Maybe they should control thermostats. How about putting speed limiters on cars so they only 20mph to keep people safe. Definitely a great idea!
If it looks like a Carter, and it quacks like a Carter, is it a Carter?
Exactly. I think children have way too many toys these days.
To a lot of people, the answer is yes.
Well...yes and no...
Trump is not being Carter. He’s acknowledging that there are consequences of his tariff policy, until he can come to an agreement with China.
The alternative is to quit the tariff war and let China continue to use tariffs to siphon jobs away from America.
My daughters are grown. Don’t care about the price of dolls.
Nobody in the press cared or worried much about it when private equity looted Toys R Us, killed jobs and ended the toy superstore chain.
Well said.
About two-thirds of the trade imbalance with China comes from the Chinese counterpart of ‘Buy American’.
People in China generally have the option of buying Chinese, and they do.
They don’t want to be seen as unpatriotic.
The 100% Chinese Huawei phone is bought, and the majority of the price American Apple phone isn’t.
Zeroing out Chinese tariffs and tossing out anti-American regulations entirely will not fix the ‘Buy Chinese’ problem.
Only variable tariffs based on trade deficits will be able to overcome Chinese resistance to buying American stuff, and then only partially.
We’re talking about toys that were cheap because manufactured by slaves. Keep that in mind.
[From my tariff proposal posted on FR]

8. $1 on an undergarment
9. $15 on a suit
10. 10 cents per inch of sewing, up to $2 on shoes and any other garment including dolls clothing
11. 80% of the genuine wholesale value of material in a garment
12. 90% of the genuine wholesale value of precious metal in an item of jewelry
13. such amounts on kitchen appliances that do not exceed

14. such amounts on hand tools, powered and unpowered, that do not exceed
80% of values of competitively priced basic models as of June 1, 2023.
Hah, I was lucky to get a piece of string to play with
And you better make it last.
If you’re good I’ll tie it in to a knot on your birthday!!!
Take a walk around the toy department at a Walmart.
Except for clothing the dolls are molded pieces of plastic that can be snapped together quickly.
And they are quite expensive.
From experience, we give our kids too too many toys..they don’t appreciate them..
Its starting to sound that way.
