EU announces €500 million package to woo scientists away from Trump's America

French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are hosting a Paris conference to attract US researchers ready to relocate because of President Donald Trump's policies.

EU commissioners, scientists and ministers for research from member countries will discuss, among other things, financial incentives at the gathering to lure disgruntled American scientists across the Atlantic.

Paris's Sorbonne university is hosting the conference, called "Choose Europe for Science".

Under Trump, universities and research facilities in the United States have come under increasing political and financial pressure, including from threats of massive federal funding cuts.

Research programmes face closure, tens of thousands of federal workers have been fired, while foreign students fear possible deportation for their political views.

The European Union hopes to offer an alternative for researchers and, by the same token, "defend our strategic interests and promote a universalist vision", an official in Macron's office told AFP.

Experts say, however, that while EU countries can offer competitive research infrastructure and a high quality of life, research funding and researchers' remuneration both lag far behind US levels.

gender studies researchers have found a home. And they’ll sue if they don’t get a big piece of the action.

Surely scientists will flock to live and work in countries that just criminalized major opposition parties—Marine Le Pen in France and AfD in Germany.

Nothing inspires the free exchange of scientific ideas quite like bureaucratic censorship and state-approved thought.

That pretty much says it all. They are welcome to have every climate scientist and diversity researcher they can find.

The same “scientists” who gave us the mRNA vax, climate change, and men in women’s locker rooms? Europe can have them!

The problem is larger than that Paris conference shows.

The EU's strategy? Lure others when they cannot produce their own in sufficient numbers. But not aiming at the largest producers of STEM graduates....

"Following the boom in STEM education in Asia over the last several decades, the rapid growth of STEM graduates in China, India, Japan, and South Korea has received significant attention. Indeed, although each of these countries experienced tremendous growth in the number of STEM graduates over the past 50 years, new players like Brazil and Mexico are making significant strides in increasing the number of students graduating in STEM fields."

The Global Distribution of STEM Graduates: Which Countries Lead the Way? Center for Security and Emerging Technology

Given the article mentions Macron and von der Leyen, it is assured this is targeted at President Trump and his policies, among which tariffs are a part and Ukraine/Russia is a part.

That’s only a bit over a quarter of the roughly $2 billion given to Havard alone. The EU will need to shell out much more.

Ron DeSantis should offer a high school diploma to every teenager who can pass their GED.

“...while foreign students fear possible deportation for their political views.”

No. It is engaging in illegal behavior to express their political views.

Is the ad going to say: “Move to the EU and get a 40% pay cut”?

“Ron DeSantis should offer a high school diploma to every teenager who can pass their GED.”

That is already available for every teenager who can’t get through high school.

Aren’t they importing enough scientists from the Middle East and Africa?

Offer the GED test to all students that want to quit and get on with their lives. The idea is to expose the education establishment.

Bet those 500 million Euros were from U.S. taxpayers via USAID.

f”hosting a Paris conference to attract US researchers ready to relocate because of President Donald Trump’s policies.”

“gender studies researchers have found a home.”

exactly ... the only “scientists” who might be tempted are ones outside the margins of ACTUAL science whose Federal grants for phony-baloney “science” have been cut off ... REAL scientists like Jennifer Dudna and her crew aren’t going anywhere ...

Diversity, so they say, is their strength.

Such as it is.
