When Charles Read went to renew his passport, he got a notification that there was a warrant out for his arrest.
A woman named Katherine Jensen told police that Read (an ex boyfriend from 20 years ago) had kicked in her door and choked her out, trying to steal the keys to her truck, and when he was unsuccessful, he fled on foot.

At first Charles Read thought someone was pulling his leg, but you can understand why he didn't notice -- because he's been paralyzed from the waist down for 25 years.
But when Read tried to be a stand-up guy and go to the police station to straighten things out, he was arrested.
Here's the body cam footage of that incident:

In that body cam footage, the arresting officer knocks him out of his chair and another officer can be heard saying,
It's a ruse, man. It's an obvious attempt not to go to jail.
But another officer pushes back:
You may want to call the district attorney's office, because if the door was kicked in, he didn't kick it in.
Ultimately, the district attorney dropped the obviously false charges against Read.
Andrew Fleischman, Read's attorney said,
I've never seen a case where somebody was so clearly innocent, and it would take so little work to establish it, and nobody was willing to do the work.
At this point, Jensen has not faced any charges for her clearly false report.
But I'm glad to see Charles Read walked away from this a free man.
“At this point, Jensen has not faced any charges for her clearly false report.”
That’s how it goes for women who file police reports. It happens every once in a while, but it is rare.
She needs to be arrested, & so do these “officers of the peace,” who think the best way to see if someone is paralyzed is to throw them out of their wheelchair.
What is wrong with people these days?!
Where did this happen?
Not a ROFL moment, is it?
College Park, Maryland...............
Legs crossed?
They must be related to Joe Biden.......”Stand up, Chuck!”................
Picked up his leg and moved it to prevent lack of circulation................
“In that body cam footage, the arresting officer knocks him out of his chair“
Civil suit incoming. Also the woman making the false charge should receive the same penalty he would have received had he actually been the perp.
“ Charles Read walked away from this a free man.”
How so, miracle?
He has to use his hands to lift the leg up and cross it.

Instant law suit.
“he walked away from this a free man.”
Its also hard to walk away when you are paralyzed from the waist down. Who writes these articles? Send them back to 3rd grade where they can hopefully learn to use metaphors that are not embarrassingly bad.
That was my observation as well. I wouldn’t just give up if I were the LO there. I would certainly investigate until I knew what happened, and if the lady filed a false report, she needs to get arrested. The fact that he was ‘sitting’ in a wheelchair is not proof of anything other than he is sitting in a wheelchair belonging to him or someone else.
After reading the whole article, I now realize the numerous inapplicable expressions were done on purpose in an attempt to be funny. Its the Bee. Even when posting real news, it is irreverent.
I have absolutely no formal medical training but I can tell if somebody in a wheelchair is paralyzed just by looking at their legs. The legs of paralyzed people have very thin legs due to muscle atrophy and that cannot be faked. Those bonehead cops should be arrested for assault.
Yeah, but you don’t throw him out of it. Sheesh these two LEO morons need to be fired or at minimum demoted, re-trained, and above all mocked.
