ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced late Wednesday that they had launched a drone attack targeting the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and accompanying warships in the Arabian Sea, in what they describe as part of a broader escalation against American and Israeli military assets in the region.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement that the operation involved multiple drones aimed at the USS Vinson and associated naval forces. This comes just 24 hours after a separate drone attack that allegedly forced the USS Harry S. Truman to retreat to the far northern Red Sea toward the Suez Canal, according to Houthi media.

Evasive action from the Carrier due to a drone caused the loss of the fighter jet. How will we respond? How does a carrier dodge a drone? Doesn't sound possible. Shoot it down!

Just two hours ago I watched a video on the history of aircraft carriers. It culminated in the description of the latest class. Their defensive armament is pretty impressive, frankly. I don’t seeing a drone getting through.

Not many kamakazi’s got through when they were used in earnest in the final days of WWII. Today, good luck.

I noticed the article said “attacked”. I see that word as the same as “sued”. i.e. you can sue anyone for anything, It doesn’t mean you have a prayer of winning.

We need counter drones, and more and better ones. A lot of those will fit on an aircraft carrier.

How many of our Reaper drones have the Houthis shot down this year? Isn’t it something like seven? Those things aren’t cheap.

Houthis make such announcements every few days. Believable?

Houthis also claim to have shot down many MQ-9 Reapers. Is that believable?

We need to start dropping a few MOABs on them.

MOABs have been dropped on Houthis by B-2s, along with a few MOPs. Chinese satellites and Iranian technicians are guiding Houthis.

tracks a lot of action against Houthis

“I noticed the article said “attacked”.”

They caused the loss of a very expensive jet. I’d call that an attack. Though I still don’t get how a carrier takes evasive action from a drone.

I see the Houthis claimed they downed a jet, but that it was denied by the USA.

Are you maybe thinking about the F18 that was lost when being towed? I suppose that could be related, but sounds like someone just screwed up.

The carrier makes a sudden hard turn. And the task force attempts to shoot down the drone.

Given the number of stories from carrier crew of being tossed around by maneuvers when clearly not under any attack, the question should be whether such maneuvers are pretty standard, especially in a potentially hostile environment. In other words, not directly related to an iminent missile or drone threat.

How can a Houthi drone even get close to one of our carriers? And how is it that those folks are still able to even carry out such attacks? I thought I saw somewhere where our planes had bombed the snot out of them.

The F-18 lost while under tow went overboard while the ship was engaged in evasive maneuvers. You can’t beat physics ... centripetal force, in this case. We nearly lost a couple of sailors with it ... far more valuable than the aircraft.

The Navy acknowledged carrier damage from Houthi drones or missiles?

This is the downside of what has been a very sedate campaign against the Houthis. Under 10 sorties a day is minimal. The invasion of Iraq featured 1700 on the first day. Israel flew over 100 a day against Hamas in the early months after 10/7, and the Houthis are much better-equipped.

Being in the Red Sea seems risky, like a rifleman getting in stabbing range of a knife-wielding assailant. The Indian Ocean provides distance, room for maneuver.

But the very limited attacks on the Houthis are likely why the Gulf states denied permission to use US bases on their soil. The operations are significant enough to draw Houthi retaliation against them, but too minor to deny the Houthis the capability to do so.

I’m not too worried about drones making it past Aegeis weapons… they’ll something a lot faster
