New internal polls show John Cornyn trailing Senate primary challenger Ken Paxton
Houston Chronicle ^ | 4/30/25 | Jeremy Wallace

New internal polls by both major parties show U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is in big trouble as he faces the toughest GOP primary opponent of his political career in 2026.

A Republican poll obtained exclusively by the Houston Chronicle show Cornyn is down against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton among likely GOP primary voters by 17 percentage points. A Democratic poll shows him down more than 20 percentage points. The numbers have some Republicans worried that Cornyn is in a race he can't win, and instead could force a primary fight that costs millions of dollars and ends up bruising the eventual GOP nominee ahead of the general election. And they come as other key Republicans are weighing whether to join the race. U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt of Houston, in particular, has emerged as a possible contender.

State Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, said it's time for someone to have a serious talk with Cornyn about whether he really wants to go through with another campaign that could quickly turn negative and costly.

"If I was an incumbent senator with these types of polling numbers, I probably wouldn't run because you can't win," Bettencourt said.

He should have retired.

But ego takes over as well as the whispers in the ear of "you just HAVE to run again! You HAVE to prevent another conservative from getting into the Senate!"

So we'll have to defeat him.

King Rino Cornyn losing in the primary is the most rewarding election race since President Trump won a first term. Cornyn is the epitome of why the GOPe/uniparty is the worst and most damaging entity in modern times.

I read that Trump endorsed Cornyn. To say I’m disappointed in Trump’s Cornyn endorsement would be an understatement.

Between RINOs like Cornyn and Muslim/Sharia Law enclaves being established in Texas, it may take a miracle for Texas to survive...

I agree and it is the most senseless flatfooted display of abject stupidity imaginable. Paxton could have been picked for AG as well but now we have a blonde version of Jeff Sessions instead. 🙄

“I read that Trump endorsed Cornyn.”

THAT is disturbing. IMO, he is assuming Cornyn will win and he wants to have Cornyn’s votes in the future. If he is a principled man, he will re-think this endorsement.

Wasn’t Paxton strongly fighting the cheating in the 2020 election? Cornyn never opened his mealy mouth in that regard, AFAIK.

Where did you hear this? The last I read, Trump was non-committal about this race.

“Well, they’re both friends of mine,” Trump said. “They’re both good men and I don’t know. We don’t, we don’t know who else is running, but these two, you know, Ken and John, they’re both friends of mine, so I’ll make a determination at the right time.”

I don’t think that is right, in fact that is a source of irritation to senate republicans because they are going to have to spend a lot of money in a state that shouldn’t require it.

if you needed every Republican vote in the senate over the next 18 months, would you endorse Paxton right now?

with or without President Trumps endorsement, Ken Paxton will win the primary and will be the new senator from Texas, but in the next 18 months it is Cornyn who will be casting votes in the senate, not Paxton..

that might help to explain President Trumps endorsement for now.

The RINO Cornyn is toast. Hopefully he will be joined by Cassidy in Louisiana, Tillis in North Carolina and Lindsey Graham in South Carolina. Time for another RINO hunt.
