Tesla started a formal process to find its next CEO last month, amidst declining public opinion about billionaire Elon Musk, according to a bombshell report from the Wall Street Journal.
“Board members reached out to several executive search firms to work on a formal process for finding Tesla’s next chief executive,” the Journal reported Wednesday night, citing people familiar with the matter.
“The board narrowed its focus to a major search firm … The current status of the succession planning couldn’t be determined. It is also unclear if Musk, himself a Tesla board member, was aware of the effort, or if his pledge to spend more time at Tesla has affected succession planning.”
Musk hasn’t publicly commented on the matter. Last week, he promised on an investor conference call that he’d be spending more time on Tesla, and less on politics. Accoridng to the Journal, Musk’s comments came in response to pressure from other board members.
However, Musk was seen at the White House on Wednesday afternoon, awkwardly wearing two hats — perhaps a symbol of him trying to lead Tesla and play politics at the same time.
Tesla sales have plunged in recent month amid a backlash against Musk’s backing of conservative politicians in Europe and his work in the U.S. as head of Trump’s government cost-cutting group. Musk has also angered some Trump supporters due to his push for more foreign tech labor.
Just 33% of U.S. adults have a favorable view of Musk, according to a poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That share is down from 41% in December.
Tesla has pinned its future on complete automation of its cars, but it is facing stiff competition now from rivals, especially China automaker BYD.

Musk should have stepped down when he decided to do this work.
I’d sell my $TSLA if Musk left the company for any reason - he’s the difference maker, the guy who made Tesla what it is and the guy who is turning Tesla into the world leader in robotics and AI-driven hardware automation. If Tesla is dumb enough to drive Musk off, I doubt I’ll be alone in dumping the stock.
Bbbwwwaaahhhaaaa!!!!!
Elon is the chief engineer of Space X, he can be the same for Tesla, Star Link....and then next dozen companies he creates to build out all of the Mars colonization effort.
Folks, Elon’s DOGE efforts have GUARANTEED, a massive Mars colonization program.
The haters didn’t see the Forrest from the trees, everything Elon is doing supports the Mars colonization program.
Boring company - Mars tunnels (not stupid Vegas)
Hyperloop- Above ground low gravity shipping of goods and equipment.
Tesla- Mars EV’s and robot workers
Starlink- Mars comms
Neuralink- rebuilding humans injured on Mars or during spaceflight, because they can operate in Mars Lower gravity with higher functionality than Earth
Grok AI- Central planning and advanced tech support
X- Solar system wide comms
(Invetro- Fertilization) Growing crops of healthy kids/twins/clones
Elon’s private schools- Mars education system
Wake up, Elon’s building the Mars colonization program everyday.
DOGE is required so the country doesn’t go bankrupt!
Perhaps Musk can do what James O’Keefe did. Start anew, make even better products. Take all of the best talent, hire others, and kick some more butt!
Maybe they could hire Bezos!!!!
I heard on the radio news yesterday that Bezos launched a whole 12 new satellites to compete with Starlink in providing internet from space.
Maybe he would like to be in charge if building cars too.
Tesla’s board cutting Musk will set fire to the company quicker than a whole army of leftist kooks armed to the teeth with molotovs.
Musk doing his duty has made him persona-non-grata on the left. The board pulling this move will alienate them on the right.
So... good luck with that, fellas.
James okeefe is a brilliant patriot.
There isn’t a comparison to Elon in our language.
Elon Musk is a defender of the human race, and the American values, if there is such a word. Maybe we’ll just call such a person, Elonesque, in the future....Elonite, I have no idea, but they’re not the same.
He is not going to Mars. Just a silly way to keep everyone in suspense. The cost is marsanomical to make up a word.
Comes a time when all CEOs must step aside, and it’s often the start of a new S-curve. Look at Apple post Jobs...
Elon should put it in good hands and then go think up the next big thing and make babies.
Musk’s super power is his obvious ability to delegate to superstars.
agree with you. Elon even says that everything he does is in furtherance of this goal...
is that a POV related to the political violence against Tesla et al?
Hardly. It wouldn’t have made any difference.
It’s just academic from a business perspective.
Besides: The stock loss might have been less than half given the alternative.
That’s significant.
So... he steps down as CEO, has no "undo control over the board", and collects his $56 billion.
Judge McCormick can then go dye her hair blue and scream through her vagina in rage.

He’s not going Mars.
He’s going to build a city, and more, on Mars, from here, and in the very near future.
Only thing going to slow him down, is federal judges, requiring deportation process for anyone leaving Earth for Mars.
Trumyos going to fix that in the courts!

I agree, everything you stated is what I’ve been telling others for years. Tesla is just one of the pieces of his Mars colonization program. The Boring Company, NeuraLink, SpaceX, X.com, Tesla - all interlinked to get mankind to Mars. I’m hoping that when StarLink goes public, that Tesla shareholders like me will get shares in StarLink. Lots of Tesla engineering was invested in SpaceX and vice versa. Tesla, with its AI and robotics cannot be split off from the Musk team. If they dump Musk, I’ll sell my shares until the bad decision is reversed.
Starship gets man to Mars, StarLink is the basis for inter-planetary comms, Boring Company machines will tunnel for water and build underground habitats, Optimus robots will do the labor on Mars, Tesla EV vehicles will do work on Mars, Tesla power packs will provide electricity, and NeuraLink implants and X/AI will allow mankind to quickly converse with the machines doing the work in the inhospitable environments. All the pieces set in place and guided by Elon Musk.
I mean it’s a thought, but honestly, even if he steps down and all, they will come up with some other excuse not to allow him to be paid.
It isn’t about the $56 billion. It’s about sticking it to Musk because they hate him.
While leading the DOGE effort to save America, in his spare time, Musk is simultaneously the CEO of the following multi-million-dollar companies:
Tesla: $750 billion (down from a peak of over $1.4 trillion in December 2024).
SpaceX: $350 billion
xAI: $80 billion
Neuralink: $9.32 billion
The Boring Company: $5.675 billion
