SINGAPORE, April 29 (Reuters) - China has waived the 125% tariff on ethane imports from the United States imposed earlier this month, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday, among a group of products that have been granted exemptions. The move will ease pressure on Chinese firms that import U.S. ethane for petrochemical production as well as provide an outlet for the natural gas liquid, a byproduct of U.S. shale gas production.

The sources said the tariff on ethane had been waived in recent days. One of them said the waiver has not been publicly announced. They declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter. China's Ministry of Commerce and China customs could not be immediately reached after office hours.

Little by little. China knows the math, now it has to adjust quietly to save face with its citizens. Here’s hoping that doing it piecemeal is the plan.

The US produces a lot of Ethane because it is a byproduct of gas fracking. They send it to who wants it.

Russia’s Ethane production is lower than the US because Russia’s nat gas endowment is so enormous that they have not had to resort to fracking shale. Regardless, it has been ramping up 5%/yr for some time and they will provide it to China if the US were to cut it off from China as part of . . . whatever.

China needs America’s consumer market more than we need their cheap plastic crap. Also, America imports 3x more than we sell to China. We have all the cards, provided the public can take a punch.

There really can be no fair trade with China even if they drop all tariffs on all imports. No Americans can do business there, they need a 51% Chinese partner. Americans who import won’t get legal protections. Intellectual property is not enforced. And now they are on YT showing how they make $30,000 leather handbags for $600 and send them, and their workers, into Europe to do the finishing so that Gucci can say “made in Italy”. That is how Covid spread through Italy in the first months of the Pandemic as tens of thousands of temporary workers came into northern Italy to work on the new season’s fashion. Not to mention there is no real economic parity. We pay something in the range of $10 to $25 for every $1 of their internal labor costs. Then they take their trade surplus and buy land in America (because we keep devaluing the dollar) and invest in weapons and land in Africa and development projects to expand their reach and spheres of influence.
