President Trump signed an executive order Monday that requires commercial truck drivers in the United States to be proficient in English.
The text of the order acknowledges the essential role that truck drivers play in the U.S. economy and the livelihood of American people.
“Every day, truckers perform the demanding and dangerous work of transporting the Nation’s goods to businesses, customers, and communities safely, reliably, and efficiently,” the order said.
Trump designated English as the country’s official language in an executive order in March. In his order Monday, the president said proficiency in English should be nonnegotiable for professional drivers.
“They should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station officers,” the order said. “Drivers need to provide feedback to their employers and customers and receive related directions in English.”
“This is common sense.”
Under the order, a driver must be able to read and speak English “sufficiently to converse with the general public” to operate a commercial vehicle in the U.S.
“My Administration will enforce the law to protect the safety of American truckers, drivers, passengers, and others, including by upholding the safety enforcement regulations that ensure that anyone behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle is properly qualified and proficient in our national language, English,” the order said.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will issue a new guidance on English proficiency testing and enforcement policies, according to the order. A violation of the English language proficiency requirement would put a driver “out-of-service,” the order said.
“You might not know, but there’s a lot of communication problems between truckers on the road with federal officials and local officials, as well, which obviously is a public safety risk,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a briefing Monday.
The decision was celebrated by Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA).
“OOIDA and the 150,000 truckers we proudly represent strongly support President Trump’s decision to resume enforcement of English proficiency requirements for commercial drivers,” OOIDA President Todd Spencer said in a statement. “Basic English skills are essential for reading critical road signs, understanding emergency instructions, and interacting with law enforcement.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Si.
Feigning no knowledge of english is a common ruse to not cooperate with law enforcement or insurance people in the event of a vehicular ‘mishap’.
Badgers?

This week, I put out scrap metal for the County to pick up. A guy came by and stopped at the pile. He spoke not a word of English, but he apparently wanted the entire pile to put in his pickup truck. Fearing liability, I wasn’t going to let it go.
To his question, “¿Por mi?” I ended the deal with “No.”
It’s about time.
Cy...............
He comes the skanky “district” junior judges to declare they don’t have to be able to speak English “temporarily for now.”
I’m from Bakersfield Ca. The Pakis, Indians, whatever they are, have their own trucking schools there. The roads are full of trucks driven by them. Then you add in all the Spanish speakers.......
Trump would be in jail for making such a demand in the UK.
Thank God and the founders for kicking the royalist bastards out of America in 1783 and again in 1815.
Sad that we “had to” bail their duplicitous tyrannical asses out in the 1940’s but the alternative was worse - although in hindsight, it’s seemingly turning out to be a wash.

The UK and most of the EU countries are self-destructing at an alarming rate because their gutless leaders are perceived as powerless to stop the invasion of lawless people from Africa and the Middle East.

All well and truly said!
victorioso!!
Great beginning but I still think Trump should issue an EO banning illegals from driving on Interstate Highways and any state roads built with federal funds.
This would go a long way towards stopping states from issuing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens.
Haven’t heard anybody mention this but maybe they’re already planning something similar. Sure hope so.
I know a goodly amount of ‘mericans that will have trouble passing a reading test in English, since they haven’t cracked a book since high school didn’t really put that much effort into it when they were in their teens.
GREAT!
I just wish they drove “American”
Just be glad they ain’t Italians...............
