Hegseth says he's undoing 'social justice/Biden initiative' that Trump signed into law

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that he had "proudly ended" the Women, Peace and Security program at the Pentagon on Tuesday, a program signed into law by President Donald Trump in his first term.

"WPS is yet another woke divisive/social justice/Biden initiative that overburdens our commanders and troops – distracting from our core task: WAR-FIGHTING," Hegseth wrote in a post on X.

"WPS is a UNITED NATIONS program pushed by feminists and left-wing activists. Politicians fawn over it; troops HATE it."

Hegseth said the department would comply with the minimum requirements of the program dictated by law and lobby to fully end it in the next budget. "GOOD RIDDANCE WPS!" he added.

I don’t know anything about this program but it sounds like it was started by Trump then ruined by Biden and leftwing nutcases.

"a program signed into law by President Donald Trump in his first term."

I don't understand how he can do away with a law proposed by Congress and signed by a President?

Trump supported and signed the initial law that established the WPS, then expanded it in 2019. Noem, Rubio and Waltz all promoted and cosponsored the bill. Just goes to show that no one is perfect, nor immune from the temptation to pander to women voters. But other than blaming it on Biden, Hegseth is right to trash this stupid DEI garbage.

What a mess of headline. Sounds like Trump signed Biden’s social justice initiative into law!

It was probably stuck in one of those omnibus CRs early in the first term.

He can’t, but the law is pretty vague, just requiring that “relevant personnel receive training”. “Relevant personnel” can certainly be reduced to a small group of people for a short amount of time, with no significant organization, training teams, staff, budget, etc.

The law is here:

This is all after I retired, so I have no idea how much time, effort and money is being wasted on WPS.

He did

No he did not.

Biden was VP before Trump was President in 2016.

There was no way he could have signed a Biden measure into law.

More than just "undoing 'social justice/Biden initiative'", Hegseth needs to purge the officers and NCOs who encouraged, forced, and implemented this DEI crap on the U.S. military.

Yep. You got it. Not too hard to figure out what happened once Biden got ahold of it.

See prior post. Seems it was introduced, at least in Senate, in 2017.

Trump probably had to sign a huge budget bill with that DEI crap in it.
