At least nine people have been killed after an SUV rammed through a packed street festival in Vancouver on Saturday night.
The vehicle rammed through the crowd at the Lapu Lapu Day event at around 8pm local time, leaving multiple people dead and scores more injured.
Detectives said a 30-year-old man, from the city and 'known to police', was 'taken into custody by people in the crowd' before being arrested at the scene following the 'mass casualty incident'.
Issuing an update on the death toll early on Sunday morning, Vancouver Police said: 'As of now, we can confirm nine people have died after a man drove through a crowd at last night's Lapu Lapu Festival.'
'Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident,' the statement added.
Dozens more were injured after the black vehicle caused carnage at the event - to honour Filipino heritage - on Saturday night.
The Vancouver Police Department said it was 'confident' this 'was not an act of terrorism'.
Acting Police Chief Steve Rai told press at the crime scene the suspect was 'known to police in certain circumstances'.
He would not confirm whether he had a criminal record saying it 'would be inappropriate for me to get into those kind of details at this point'.
Horrifying video and pictures showed utter devastation as mangled bodies were strewn across the road following the crash.
Dazed bystanders could be seen racing away from the scene and from victim to victim as local cops swooped and arrested the driver.
The suspect was alleged to have told witnesses he was 'sorry' as he was dragged out of the car.
Sources told The Vancouver Sun he appeared to have been suffering from mental health problems.

So, he was “on their radar?”
NAME PLEASE!!!
In Canada, because they engage with homeless people as well, he may have been known by them because of his interactions with social workers and police outreach and not because he’s a career criminal.
Whether in Canada or the US, I have a feeling that every single person is basically “on their radar”. And what good does it do?
The homeless drive SUVs in Canada?
In before the Simpsons meme. Say it!
Jebadiah???

here lies the problem
If the police announce that they are “confident this is not an act of terrorism” then the perp is most definitely Moslem and he is doing his part in the Moslem holy war against infidels.
The perp looks Philippino but there are Philippino Muslims
Once again though... It’s ‘not’ terrorism. LOL
Never believe a rumor until the government officially denies it.
I have been saying for 20 years+ that this is a FAR greater danger that can never be fully guarded against than mass shootings.
Security makes 1000’s of people queue up into lines go through security... you just gathered up a nice group of densly packed victims to attack before they go through security. Whether its with explosives, a gun (because they haven’t gone through security yet) or simply run into them with a car like this incident.
I was wondering if he was Filipino, and that’s why they were quick to say that It
isn’t terrorism.
” Never believe a rumor until the government officially denies it.”
The truth, if ever it appeared in print!
Indeed.
Thanks for adding that. I saw the headline and excerpt and thought I was going to have to ask who or what a Lapu Lapu was.
I figure it's going to be one or more of these three:
Muslim suffering from sudden Jihad syndrome
A youngish male on psychiatric drugs
A confused wanna be Trans.
So the pre event checklist item : Park Dump Trucks to block street was not performed .
Charlie , the Head Honcho of the Motor Pool /Public Works didn’t wonder why the Dump Trucks weren’t deployed ? His guys probably would have been the persons positioning the trucks.
The Fire Marshall didn’t question the lack of Dump Trucks ? The Fire Marshall should have been doing a walk through of the event site prior to opening to the public . FM would have had a plan to remove those same trucks if need be in an emergency.
Typically a meeting with the City Manager or their appointed rep* would attend a planning meeting with Fire, Police, EMS , Event Promoter, Event Security , Vendors , so on and so forth .
Not blocking the streets should have been a big red flag . Who signed off on this plan and why ?
*Local city has a Event Planner position , they do this sort of thing on a big scale , Rock Festivals, Marathon races, etc. They coordinate all the pieces required for an event like this . Something is not adding up here .
