Study: $28 TRILLION in “Climate Damage” From Biggest Companies; Now Gov Can SUE Them
The New American ^ | April 25, 2025 | Selwyn Duke

Ready for higher prices — for everything? Because this will be the result if a new academic study’s authors have their way. The researchers, out of Dartmouth College, claim that the world’s largest companies have caused $28 trillion in “climate damage.” They make no bones about their money-grabbing agenda, either. “[W]e argue that the scientific case for climate liability is closed,” they write in their study summary. So now, “science [is] no longer an obstacle to the justiciability of climate liability claims,” they conclude.

Translation: The “science is settled.”

(My, where have we heard that before?)

This is no small matter. While the Trump administration won’t be acting on this “science,” it’s there at the ready should a future, left-wing administration desire a pretext for the proctology-exam version of another private-sector fleecing.

Note here, too, that companies don’t pay taxes or fines, people do, and our whole civilization runs on energy. Thus would such government theft mean higher prices for everyday Americans — across the board.

All That Beautiful Money — Just Waiting!

Reporting on the story, The Associated Press writes that the climate study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, is

part of an effort to make it easier for people and governments to hold companies financially accountable, like the tobacco giants have been.

A Dartmouth College research team came up with the estimated pollution caused by 111 companies, with more than half of the total dollar figure coming from 10 fossil fuel providers: Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, National Iranian Oil Co., Pemex, Coal India and the British Coal Corporation.

For comparison, $28 trillion is a shade less than the sum of all goods and services produced in the United States last year.

About 30 years ago a lawyer friend of mine was joining her father's law firm and they were going to be specializing in environmental law because that's where the growth in the legal business was going to be.

Looks like it was true.

FYI last week during both the Cosco and Walmart earnings call, both companies said approximatly the same thing. They’ve reduced their earnings estimates. They have increased their sales volume but trimmed back on profit to stimulate sales. Both companies believe we are heading into a downturn where buyers will be severely strained.

My suspicion is Walmart did this as a hedge against any trust busting that might take place. There’s no doubt that they are in the position of a classic trust per the definition of market dominance and control. But if they’re actively lowering profits it would be hard to bust them up as that would lead to higher costs. They’ve created a poison pill.

As for Costco, I’m shocked. It’s certainly not a move they were forced into.

Incidentally, my portfolio is almost back to it’s all time high.

I’m sure they’ll find plenty of juries, and crooked judges, ready to award giant compensation amounts to just about anyone...

And Al Gore will be first in line to collect his fair share.

Willy (Sutton) was asked why he robbed banks. He replied, “because that is where the money is”.

In a sane world, the people who put out this sort of stuff would get beaten continuously until they shut up their lying/ignorant mouths.

Hm.. $28 trillion since 1990 is about $800 million a year … megh… not impressed

Factor in the amount of food grown, other technologies advancing quicker, people being able to stay warm in Winter, cooler etc using fossil fuels ….

I’d like to see the study comparing where we’d be without these technologies.

Twerps

my gut feeling is the authors are a couple liberal arts majors. it’s always the liberal arts majors crowing about ‘settled science’ and so on.

Reparations based on a hoax. “Climate change” is not led by concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and to claim that any climate change is anthropogenic in origin, ignores the vastly greater effects presented by volcanic activity and something as arcane as sun spots. Mankind may strip small portions of the earth’s surface of its natural homeostasis, by erosion, or exposure to considerable amounts of hazardous materials, but by and large, the natural processes of nature have a restorative effect, and the order of things is re-established over time.

And the biggest part of that hoax? “The science is settled.”

Real science is NEVER settled, and is in actuality, a series of hypotheses which are corrected over time as new valid information is integrated into the collection of data.

Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it is raining.

"$28 trillion in “climate damage.”

As a first step they should be required to prove that manmade climate change exists, and not simply list weather events followed by social media and political rhetoric.
