ICE is reversing termination of legal status for international students around US, lawyer says

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The federal government is reversing the termination of legal status for international students around the U.S. after many filed court challenges against the Trump administration crackdown, a government lawyer said Friday.

The records in a federal student database maintained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had been terminated in recent weeks, often without the students or their schools being notified. Judges around the country had already issued orders temporarily restoring the students’ records in dozens of lawsuits challenging the terminations.

More than 1,200 students nationwide suddenly lost their legal status or had visas revoked, leaving them at risk for deportation. Some left the country while others have gone into hiding or stopped going to class.

Government says it will restore student status

In one of the lawsuits, a lawyer for the government read a statement in federal court in Oakland, California, that said ICE was restoring the student status for people whose records were terminated in recent weeks. Also Friday, the statement was read by a government attorney in a separate case in Washington, said lawyer Brian Green, who represents the plaintiff in that case. Green provided The Associated Press with a copy of the statement that the government lawyer emailed to him.

It says: “ICE is developing a policy that will provide a framework for SEVIS record terminations. Until such a policy is issued, the SEVIS records for plaintiff(s) in this case (and other similarly situated plaintiffs) will remain Active or shall be re-activated if not currently active and ICE will not modify the record solely based on the NCIC finding that resulted in the recent SEVIS record termination.”

Sounds more like a warning shot from ICE, shake things up and get those students attention.

From the article: “Some left the country...”

This may have been the plan all along. i.e. get people to self deport.

What the heck does this mean?

Legalese is such a pain with all its double and triple negative stuff.

I’m sure there are, and they are being tried as well.

It’s kinda like marketing. You have TV ads, newspapers, sponsoring events, etc. Every little bit helps.

Probably, rather than going blanket, they’ll proceed one at a time. A personal visit. A notification. Present options.

The Chinese government passed a law that any Chinese must become an intelligence asset if asked to do so. So every Chinese student should be ejected ASAP.

The fact that some went into hiding means they never intended to leave. Also, if they’ve become professional students just to stay, they should be deported.

This has to be handled slowly and by the book. Those advocating for filling stadiums with illegals and shipping them out by the thousand aren’t taking into account how public perception, like what we’re seeing in this case, can destroy the entire enterprise. Recall the damage done by a couple of prison guards in Iraq who were into BDSM and filmed themselves torturing and humiliating Iraqi prisoners. Just one or two yahoos doing something like that would turn fifty-one percent of the country against the entire endeavor.

A friend interviewed airmen to become Air Police. They’re applying for a job. You’d think they’d watch what they say. But he’d get responses like, “I just really want to bust some heads.” Or “I want to be the bastard in charge for once.” A percentage of the people who might be drafted into this enterprise if it were to get rid of thousands will be like the Iraqi BDSM guards, or the low-brow idiots you really can’t risk giving authority too. The public’s perception is what will enable Trump to be successful, or not.

School year is coming to an end. Do not issue ANY student visas to any muslim or third world or scum around the world. Once you do the courts can protect, we will get a 3 year reprieve and the schools will have a financial incentive to get their act together and still pay a price in the mean time.

There are well over 12 million illegals in the country right now. A more reasonable estimate is 40 to 60 million. Holding individual hearings before deporting each one of them simply is not going to work. It is not supposed to work.

And the illegals must go. They are all future Democrat voters (or even current voters) who will ensure Democrat control of the government forever. That is why the Democrats imported them.

How to remove them is a reasonable question. How many must go is a reasonable question. 12 million would be a good starting point for negotiations.

this is not ok, if they had an issue to put them on list for termination of legal status it was likely a good reason. judges are overstepping their authority IMO.

It means the government told them to leave then changed its mind. Now the visa holders can stay. There would have been too many lawsuits.

LOSING

It’s obvious the Trump team is well aware of the problems and they’re working them. It will take time. I’m not counting on Congress, but they could make it much easier. There’s no obvious movement there. But what would cause a huge portion of this problem to self deport is to make it illegal for anyone to provide benefits of any sort. No welfare payments, no food stamps, only rudimentary medical. That last because...perception again. Just those things would cut the problem in half. Most of them are here because various government programs are paying them to be here. Take that away and there they go.

Don’t have a problem with chucking out Chinese spy students and Islamist agitators. The current notable case here in New Mexico is a doctoral student from Ghana. He’s at New Mexico Tech which is a hardcore school for the sciences. (As a contractor I did high explosives work there in the 90’s.).
