President Donald Trump on Thursday offered rare criticism of Vladimir Putin, urging the Russian leader to “STOP!” after a deadly barrage of attacks on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.

“I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. “Lets get the Peace Deal DONE!”

The difficulty in understanding the Russian is that we do not take cognizance of the fact that he is not a European, but an Asiatic, and therefore thinks deviously. We can no more understand a Russian than a Chinaman or a Japanese, and from what I have seen of them, I have no particular desire to understand them, except to ascertain how much lead or iron it takes to kill them. In addition to his other Asiatic characteristics, the Russian have no regard for human life and is an all out son of bitch, barbarian, and chronic drunk.

Not that hard. Putin is a power-hungry KGB thug financed by greedy oligarchs.

--- "“In rare criticism of Russia” comment belongs on the editorial page, not in news."

When the war began, many Freepers played the either/or game, presenting only two choices. Choose supporting Zelensky or choose supporting Putin. Being concerned about the national debt and putting foreign aid on our giant credit card was deemed by some to be code -- dog whistle, as the Democrats used to say -- analogous to supporting Putin. Thus were born "putinista," "Putin stooge," and the like. Recall those who opined "not my circus and not my clowns?" A third option annoyed.

Three years later and after the election of President Trump and Vice President Vance, once our president trotted out the "Biden's war" phrase, it was 'off to the races.' Once Secretary Rubio acknowledged it to be a "proxy war" -- referencing in part the Biden element in it -- it becomes now time again for the same gambit to be played. One is supposed to choose Zelensky or choose Putin, while no third option is "allowed."

The mainstream media is now invested as well, "activist journalism" which you rightly observe "belongs on the editorial page, not in news."

The next months will be most interesting, as all wars come to their ends. Ours in Vietnam -- my era -- as the 19 years in Afghanistan -- end. These 3 years or so will not be "forever" nor end tomorrow. But officially non-NATO Ukraine will come to cease war with non-NATO Russia. How? That's anyone's guess.

The "in rare criticism of Russia" phrase is editorial, and intended to apply a but of pressure on President Trump to play the "there are only two options" gambit to one of two conclusions. When a third option comes, the "there are only two options" gambit fails by default.

One recalls the debate admonition that controlling the words and definitions is itself a strategy. Orwell provided a fine example of that.

--- "“In rare criticism of Russia” comment belongs on the editorial page, not in news." Yup[.

I don’t understand why they would think Putin *would* stop at this point. The US is the only party trying for peace. The Europeans with Euro signs in their eye, thinking a vast new wealth from mineral could finally build a technology to green the earth not to mention quantum computers to run AI require some very specialized minerals. They think this wealth will solve all their social and money problems if they can only knock the greedy Russians down and take their stuff.

Most of today’s ‘Reporters’ would flunk Freshman Journalism when I went to school, and the red ink would be flowing over EVERYTHING they write. There are few real reporters left today, either in Print Media, Radio or TV Media.

Agreed. For this, I look to further sources to flesh out many subjects and stances. Whether one hails Orwell's truths or Chomsky's notion of "messaging," the use of words is crucial in media, and getting a populace to accept doublethink seems quite the goal.

To which Putin replied: This is what I do. Terrorism is my trademark. Mind your own business, Trump. Ukraine is mine and you can't stop me.

If George Patton said all that, the pro-Putin members here on FR will now be hating Patton. Patton is now a Zeeper and a neocon and a globo-homo who hates America.

Criticism of Putin is nowhere near as rrare as praise of AP. With good reason.

Thinkspeak is the goal. They make truth seekers work very hard to find the truth, if it is at all possible.

Hot wars, where many thousands and perhaps millions die, do end. But there are cold-wars that last 'forever'. In the middle-east, the Muslims have been at war with anybody not-Muslim, for thousands of years. In Europe. Russia has been a hostile country to the western countries for hundreds of years, and that shows no end in sight.

China is in constant 'war' with its neighbors and that shows no end in sight either. If you have something your neighboring country wants you are automatically their enemy and war is not so far away.
br> It's the 'normal' state of humanity. Wars and hostilities will be around as long as humans exist. But, some areas/regions are specialists in forever being in conflicts with their neighbors.

Yup.

Nope. We're all "specialists."

“In a rare criticism of Putin, Trump urges the Russian leader …”

Who would have ever thought that Biden would be tougher on Putin than Trump would be, but here we are.

Maybe Trump has a salvo of strongly worded letters prepared for Putin, too? That’ll put some real fear into Putin for sure.
