KYIV, Ukraine—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed back on a U.S. proposal to recognize Russia’s control of Crimea as part of a cease-fire agreement, throwing into doubt President Trump’s efforts to bring a quick end to the war.
“Ukraine will not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea,” Zelensky said at a press conference here on Tuesday. “There’s nothing to talk about here. This is against our constitution.”
Zelensky’s dismissal upends Trump’s latest gambit to halt the war in Ukraine—now in its fourth year—and casts new uncertainty on the future of the relationship between Kyiv and Washington, which Trump has made conditional on a quick deal.
American officials had presented a series of ideas for ending the war—including the Crimea proposal—to Ukrainian officials last week and expected an answer on Wednesday at a summit in London, where Ukrainian, U.S. and European officials will gather.
Zelensky said Russia should agree to a cease-fire before further talks in order to demonstrate “serious steps, and not childishness.” He said that Ukrainian officials meeting with U.S. and European officials in London on Wednesday would have a mandate to discuss a partial or full cease-fire, which Ukraine agreed to last month but Moscow rejected.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday announced a unilateral 30-hour Easter cease-fire, but Zelensky said the Russians never fully stopped their attacks. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to travel to Russia later this week to continue discussions to end the war in Ukraine.
“Negotiations continue,” Leavitt said. “We feel we’re hopefully moving in the right direction.”
Zelensky has tried to keep the U.S. on Ukraine’s side, while also pushing them to be skeptical about Putin’s claims to want peace—a line he hasn’t always walked successfully.

Zelenskyy had no issue when Obama HANDED Crimea to Putin..but hey that was different when Obama did it..Zelenskky does NOT want peace..he wants the war to go on forever and wait til Trump is out of office so the Dems if they get back power will give him billions of dollars so he can buy more mansions

At this point what Ukraine thinks is irrelevant. The real parties in this proxy war are the US and Russia with Europe on the periphery. Without US aid, Ukraine is powerless. They hold no cards.
Zelensky was thrown out of the White House February 28. He flew to London Mar 1 and was inserted in a photo with NATO leaders on Mar 2nd.
Putin's 'red-line' has long been Ukraine being given membership in NATO, as NATO would then park technology like missiles next to his border, pointed at Moscow. NATO was talking up NATO membership as provocation in 2022. So this photo of Zelensky inserted with NATO seems like a NATO threat to give Ukraine membership.
The article says there are proposals that would set Ukraine's exclusion from NATO membership as a term for a peace agreement, but there's no way to enforce that. NATO wants to force regime change in Russia to insert a NATO puppet; they aren't going to stop trying.
