Elite universities push for federal funding while ignoring legal and ethical obligations, fueling public distrust as they prioritize ideology over academic rigor and free speech.
Harvard has refused to accept the orders of a Trump administration commission concerning its chronic problems with anti-Semitism, campus violence, and racial tribalism, bias, and segregation.
Yet, unlike some conservative campuses that distrust an overbearing Washington, Harvard and most elite schools like it want it both ways. They do as they please on their own turf and yet still demand that the taxpayers send them multibillion-dollar checks in addition to their multibillion-dollar private incomes.
Aside from the issues of autonomy and free expression, there are lots of campus practices that higher education would prefer were not widely known to the public.
But soon they will be, and thus will become sources of public anger. Perhaps envision elite private colleges as mossy rocks, which seem outwardly picturesque—until you turn them over and see what crawls beneath.
So, if there are protracted standoffs, our elite campuses will be hard-pressed to defend the indefensible. This effort will be difficult because public confidence in higher education has already plummeted to historic lows in the most recent polls.
In Amerispeak public surveys, those expressing very little confidence or none at all in higher education have soared to about 30 percent of respondents, while those polling only “some” confidence rose to 40%.
Polls show that less than a third of Americans have quite a lot of confidence in our college campuses.
No wonder: Over the past half-century, tuition has generally risen at twice the rate of inflation. In part, that price-gouging became standard because federal aid to our most prestigious schools has skyrocketed, hand-in-glove with the federalized student loan program. It has become a $1.7 trillion entity in which the

“So, if there are protracted standoffs, our elite campuses will be hard-pressed to defend the indefensible.”
Seems to be the default stance of the left. The media and the Dem/communist party have dug in like ticks on a variety of indefensible positions.
The only way I see them changing is if they get seriously, soundly crushed in the mid terms. The left is showing that they are in complete denial about the cause of their defeat in 2024.
Harvard has something like a $60 BILLION DOLLAR ENDOWMENT FUND that they won’t spend, yet they beg for, nay DEMAND, government TAXPAYER handouts taken from people they disdain and call ignorant hillbillies.............
I’d like to see the term “ivory towers” used in reference to Harvard more often. It describes the conceit and snobbery of the elitist looters who dwell there.
… Well, I guess I was wrong, I just don’t belong
But then I’ve been there before
Everything’s all right, I’ll just say good night
And I’ll show myself to the door
Hey, I didn’t mean to cause a big scene
Just give me an hour and then
Well, I’ll be as high as that ivory tower
That you’re livin’ in
… ‘Cause I’ve got friends in low places
This is exactly my experience getting a BS in computer science in the 1990's (albeit not from a prestigious university such as VDH is writing about). I heard a ton of the liberal orthodoxy from my liberal arts "core" courses, but exactly zero of that from CS or math courses. My son said his experience was the same. Yet, by the 2000's it was creeping into the grad level CS courses (the reason I dropped out of grad school and I'm happy with a BS).
I don't know about everyone else, but this attitude kinda pisses me off and makes me want to say "No!"
They’re also incredible hypocrites. Harvard has never said peep about the academic freedom for Bob Jones, Hillsdale or Grove City.
I’m curious to know how many students are American and how many are INTERNATIONAL.
And what about those who are teaching.
Most of the international students are getting real educations in STEM, while the American students are the ones getting indoctrinated in woke.
There’s a very easy solution for Harvard.
Decline all Federal money. That means total freedom for your university.
Many Christian and conservative colleges do it.
Yep. If one takes the king’s coin, one must do the king’s bidding...

Stopped listening to Garth Brooks when I saw him perform and celebrate at Biden’s inauguration
Wish I hadn’t seen him in concert
Destroy these elite propaganda mills and SAVE AMERICA.
They teach and advocate destruction of the USA. They hate our founding principles and Constitution. They hate white people. They hate success derived from superior intelligence, hard work and merit.
No society can survive “phony” privilege based upon mediocrity, skin color and complete corruption from which the brightest and best among us are excluded.
We know these Ivy League Marxist Camps as OBVIOUS enemies of American survival.
Burn them to the ground. Plow their ashes deep into the soil.
Destroy these citadels of hatred and the Republic may survive.
I know. Garth went woke. I heard he opened a gay bar in Nashville stocked with Bud Lite.
I support Trump withholding my tax money from funding these lefty institutions whose policies I vehemently disagree with - allowing DEI, violence, and “takeovers” of campus and buildings.
I will never forgive these lefty radicals for blocking off Columbia when were there to attend a graduation and weren’t allowed on the campus - a campus partly funded by my tax dollars.
Yep, defund them and remove their favorable tax status.
According to grok, in the 2022-2023 academic year here’s the foreign student enrollment. According to them, more than half of the students are in STEM programs.
NYU. 24,496
Northeastern 20,637
Columbia 19,001
USC 17,264
Illinois Urbana 14,680
Purdue 11,872
Berkeley 11,719
UCLA 9,725
ASU. 17,900
BU 8,700
Many of these students come from big money and they spend it!
