As Entertainment Industry Flees California, People Fear Los Angeles Could Become ‘the Next Detroit’
Gateway Pundit ^

Posted on 04/18/2025 9:43:40 PM PDT by Tench_Coxe

California has been losing population for the last two years due to high taxes and regulations. Up until now, most of the people leaving the state are just average people seeking greener pastures.

Now the entertainment industry is starting to flee the state for many of the same reasons. What happens to Los Angeles when there is no more Hollywood? It’s a huge part of the city’s identity.

(snip)

None of this is going to change if they keep electing the same kind of leaders. Why do none of them understand this?

I like to say that jurisdiction is everything. What sorta proves this is Las Vegas gaining a massive influx of population from CA, and massive investment by Sony and other video production firms moving from LA—short distance geographically, light years of distance politically, demographically.

Las Vegas is going to hell in a handbasket. Lived there for 41 years, retired and got out in 2020.
Politically it’s turning into california with all the california crime and stupidity.

The movie industry began in NYC, with an off shot in Chicago. The move was made, because California had more days of warm weather and sunshine. Sunshine, you may ask, what does THAT have to do with anything ( or with the price of eggs in England, to use a very old fashioned term, meaning the same thing) about film making? Well...they shot a LOT of scenes OUTSIDE, in those days; even built indoor sets with NO roofs, to get that light.

So IF the movie industry leaves Hollywood, now, it doesn't matter at all. Many films ARE shot somewhere else.

I’m currently in California near fearless leader. Yes I could see this happening. I don’t understand how they put up with it. Since Ronald Reagan this place has gone to hell.

What is the product of Hollywood?

Hollywood exist to produce entertainment. Entertainment is a commodity today, and to be honest there is a glut on the market of things that the consumer finds entertaining, a lot of it is easily accessible and best of all for free!

The reason Hollywood exist is ending. While being “woke” is not the only reason for it’s demise, it did not help. With or without Hollywood only making movies that pushed THE MESSAGE, it would soon be dead anyway.

The movie industry is in fact competing against itself. A large inventory of past production (much of it better quality then what is produced today) is available to consumers free or for a fraction of the cost of going to a theater to watch a current “blockbuster”.

Maybe California should become an independent country and declare itself part of Latin America?

Census Bureau 2024 Estimate: 40.4% Hispanic

Next Largest Ethnic Group: 34.3% White

The movie industry began in NYC, with an off shot in Chicago.

It began in New Jersey, where Thomas Edison was based.

The move was made, because California had more days of warm weather and sunshine.

Partially. But also because film producers were infringing on Edison's film patents, not paying him royalties he was due. These producers were trying to get far away from Edison's patent enforcement agents.

Hollywood was built on intellectual property infringement.

Ironic, isn't it?

People in AZ say don’t California my Arizona. Too bad the people in Vegas didn’t have a similar saying for Nevada.

Detroit is doing much better with a reduced population, ask Kid Rock.

According to new Census Bureau estimates, Detroit’s population grew in 2023.
That being said. Detroit is doing just fine, and has been for almost a decade.
Please. Do us a favor and don’t visit.

“For 40 years, I’ve been hearing that the film industry is leaving Los Angeles”

It’s a slow exodus, but it is happening. Lower budget production like most of all Hallmark movies and series has been filming in BC for years. Wilmington North Carolina is known in the industry as Wilmywood. 300 million in industry spending last year. Of course they offer 25% in spending incentive write offs like Hollywood has been doing.
