IRS agreement with ICE to share immigrants' info could lead to billions less in tax revenue 10% fewer undocumented immigrants filing their taxes would mean a decrease of $9.5 billion a year in tax revenue, a tax policy organization found.

Like millions of American citizens and immigrants, Ivan filed his taxes last year. But Ivan, 54, a Massachusetts resident who hails from Colombia, is worried a recent agreement between the IRS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement means he is in danger of being deported for doing what he believed was the right thing.

And if taxpayers like Ivan decide not to file taxes because the IRS has said it will share certain tax information filed by undocumented immigrants with ICE, it could cumulatively eliminate billions in tax revenue and create “a massive problem” for citizens and immigrants alike, experts said.

Undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in federal, state and local taxes in 2022, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a nonprofit, nonpartisan tax policy organization. About $59.4 billion of that went to the federal government and $37.3 billion to state and local governments, according to the group’s analysis. It found that even a 10% decrease in the number of undocumented immigrants filing their taxes would mean a decrease of $9.5 billion a year in tax revenue.

“The biggest issue from a revenue standpoint is that opening up tax records for immigration enforcement is going to reduce tax compliance of immigrants, whether undocumented or not, and that will have a significant impact on tax revenue,” said Tom Bowman, a policy counsel with the Center for Democracy and Technology’s security and surveillance project.

Another Faux reason to keep the illegal aliens here.

Don’t want them and certainly do not accept their false premise!

9.6 billion? Ok, and how many billions would we save by using that information to deport more illegals?

By the way, not everything is about money.

The Biden crowd didn’t care about money when they wee flooding them in. Suddenly they are budget hawks? Forget about it.

Who cares if we lose a mere $9.5 bil,ion- illegals cost this nation over $1 TRILLION DOLLARS every single year when all the costs of their crimes, both direct costs and indirect, are estimated! Deport them all and close the border and we will GAIN hundreds of billions perhaps a more than a trillion and our nation will be much much safer! Ther is a lowball estimate of 80,000 VIOLENT crimina,s that pour across our border every year! Those folks are walking the streets in neighborhoods all across this nation!

I answered that in my post- they did an esti ate decades ago, back when we didn’t have nesrly as many illegals as today, and back then the esti ate was “between $400 billion and $600 billion when all costs were added up” (direct and indirect, ie a family loses their bread winner to a drunk illegal driver, the family then needs counseling, likely put on meds to cope, loses the salary of the earner, have to take lesser paying jobs, etc)

That figure is no doubt over $1 trillion dol.ars today as numbers have doubled or more since the estimates were done decades ago.

Like millions of American citizens and immigrants who are here legally, Ivan filed his taxes last year, using a stolen / false Social Security Number. But Ivan, 54, a Massachusetts resident who hails an illegal alien from Colombia, is worried a recent agreement between the IRS and Immigration and Customs Enforcement means he is in danger of being deported for doing what he believed was the right thing being in the country illegally.

Whose Social Security Number did Ivan steal?

If he is undocumented all he needs to do his provide the proper information to get the correct documents to show he has legal status in the U.S.

Oh, you mean he entered this country illegally? That is not the same thing at all.

Tell me again how a $10 billion loss there would offset the $100 billion that illegals cost us now, plus the losses from crime and the hurt on the criminals’ victims.

Call me whatever but how does someone file taxes without a social security number, which illegals don’t have? And does anyone who relies on cash day labor actually file a return?
