Trump considers pause on auto tariffs, says carmakers need more time

President Trump on Monday suggested he might temporarily exempt the auto industry from tariffs he previously imposed on the sector to give carmakers time to overhaul their complex supply chains.

Mr. Trump told reporters gathered in the Oval Office that automakers "need a little bit of time" to relocate production from Canada, Mexico and elsewhere to the U.S.

Car manufacturers' supply chains are tightly interwoven with other nations, making it almost impossible to make vehicles entirely in the United States.

Because U.S. automakers source many of their car parts from key trade partners, including Canada, Mexico and China, a fully American-made car doesn't exist, according to experts.

Mr. Trump has previously reversed course on tariffs, causing upheaval in financial markets and leading economists to raise the odds of the U.S. economy entering a recession this year.

The 25% tariffs on foreign-made cars, which Mr. Trump designed with the intention of reshoring auto manufacturing to the U.S., is likely to boost car prices by thousands of dollars, experts say.

The goal of tariffs is reshoring production to America, and the transition period for doing that viably varies based on what is being produced, so I am glad that fact is being integrated into the tariff dynamics.

I don’t understand why liberals are so angry about these tariffs. All they need to do is wait a few days and Trump will cave on another one.

Here’s my personal take....

Obviously there’s been severe trade imbalances for a long time that we need to correct as a nation. I personally don’t believe this particular policy is the best way to achieve that, and it is so ill-conceived and potentially devastating that I don’t think it’ll last long. This on again, off again tariffs on this and that sector just creates uncertainty.

INCREMENTALISM should have been the strategy, not taking on the whole world simultaneously.

I think the Trump administration will probably start to score some victories country by country, and I’m hoping enough mini victories that it would be able to claim a victory over the entire thing and abandon this sweeping global tax that it has imposed on 185 countries.

And if that happens, I think the markets reverse. I’m optimistic because I doubt that this particular iteration of the tariff policy will remain in effect for very long.

Your comment is both funny and quite accurate.

Except they have no idea that any of the tariffs will last after the next 3 1/2 years, so they have to be quick and significant to really motivate much.

The hundred or so countries that are reportedly seeking to renegotiate their trade deals with America to minimize tariffs may have those trade deals signed yet this Spring.

I just thought of what this reminds me of.

The elimination diet.

An elimination diet is an eating plan that omits a food or group of foods believed to cause an adverse
food reaction, often referred to as a “food intolerance.” By removing certain foods for a period of time
and then reintroducing them during a “challenge” period, you can learn which foods are causing
symptoms or making them worse

From My Revised Tariff Plan posted earlier today:

“There shall be no tariff on bartered items internal to a motor vehicle organization, bartered beverage exchange system, or other barter system approved for tariff exemption by and justly held in good standing with the Secretary of Commerce.”

I posted this about a week ago:

Mexico can make wiring harnesses cheaper. Ford can internally barter for those wiring harnesses with American-made auto parts.

What you fail to see is how not having a well thought out plan is the plan all along.

It’s genius.

China did erect this bridge which is an engineering feat. It creeps me out just thinking about how they built it. I couldnt walk across it. I would be terrified. Probably wouldn't do it even if built in America

Donnie… you need to think. Manufacturing is not like putting a frozen pizza in the microwave for six minutes.

Trump has laid down his plan and let them all know as we move forward and become more self sufficient they will have to lower thier tariffs to compete with American companies. Walk back the say? maybe but it could be part of the plan
