Somebody had to say it!
IT was killed with standardization, STANAGs and major officers’ loyalties to their home countries. There is no Warsaw Pact anymore; neither should be NATO.
“The solution is not sentimental nostalgia. It is clear-eyed realism...”
NATO minus USA is not capable of that.
Yep, cut it up and bury it before it rots America any further.
NATO’s hollowness was evident in the Serbo-Croatian war during the Clinton administration. Even European observers were lamenting that right there in their own back yard, European countries did nothing until the U.S. finally decided to take some decisive action.
Very perceptive and well written article.
At some point, some Napoleonic figure may arise in France or some other country and move through Western Europe, building an empire and engaging in ethnic cleansing. If I had to bet, I’d say that such a conquering figure would most likely be a Muslim.
“Even European observers were lamenting that right there in their own back yard, European countries did nothing until the U.S. finally decided to take some decisive action.”
I remember that too. Serbia had some decent air defense systems from Soviet days and the rest of the NATO countries were, like, “No way in Hell are we going to fight them”, so they demanded that the US attack the Christians there.
More like a black hole.
Why bother rebuilding it?
NATO is obsolete organization that exists to launder money.
It should and must die and be replaced here by an American First foreign policy.
NATO has been nothing more than a power trip and money laundering scheme for many years.
“a foundational lie at the heart of the Alliance: the idea that an empire can masquerade as a collective defense pact without consequences”
Brilliant.
“There is no Warsaw Pact anymore; neither should be NATO.”
Another relic of the Cold War that has outlived it’s purpose by several decades.
Bump
Agreed.
While we abhor war, ambivalence is worse.
The main point is that it was formed to defend Europe against Russia, and Russia hasn’t had any intent to invade Europe for decades, if ever. I’m beginning to doubt they ever had any intent to attack even during the Cold War.
For at least 20 years after World War II, Russia was devastated. I think they had plans for how they would proceed if a war broke out, and both sides expected that. But I don’t think they ever intended to conquer the rest of Europe. That is, with tank columns.
I think the USSR intended to “conquer” Europe through radical leftist politics and terror cells like Bader Meinhoff, Red Brigades, IRA etc. And essentially they succeeded, just like they did with us by infiltrating academia, religion etc. Ironically their victory came after the USSR host imploded. They screamed and warned for us not to follow that path they stated us down… But it was too late. The west was fully infected.
I think more than anything else, our presence in Europe and NATO was less about actually having a war, and more about reminding those western European countries which side they were on, having good in roads and other economies and politics, and a lot of daily contact with those people. To prevent the Soviet red disease from taking over Europe.
Instead of spending the money to improve their fighting capabilities, they built themselves a very expensive ritzy
headquarters. Bureaucracy uber alles. Check it out:

When Greece and Turkey get into a shooting war, which NATO member is it going to back? When a peasant mob in England or France or Germany overthrows their corrupt government, what is NATO going to do about it? With emptied warehouses, shuttered factories and DEI recruits, NATO has become toothless and rudderless. Its mission ended a generation ago. Time to put up the tombstone and let it RIP.
