VDH is amazing. His knowledge of history is second to none.
Thank you for posting this. I am a big fan of VDH. He is far more knowledgeable than so many of the people here and elsewhere who have suddenly assumed the role of economic experts.
Thanks for posting this. I very much appreciate Hanson.
more will be coming in 90 days — this was a soft punch
Hanson swatted down any notion that “there’s going to be help from the Democrats on deregulation, tax reduction, investment, protecting American companies, dealing with the debt, dealing with the deficit.”
“I don’t think there is. Nothing’s coming out of the Left,” he asserted. “Everything that’s coming out of the Left is antithetical to what the Wall Street Journal, for example, believes. I just would like to hear what their alternative scenario is.”
An excellent appraisal by Prof Hanson on the subject of tariffs. You may not agree with his conclusions, but he wordsmiths most excellently.

The MAIN thing that causes recessions is......The media. Think not? Think back to 2022. We had 2 quarters of consecutive losses in GDP. The CLASSIC definition of a recession. They claimed we were not in recession, and the public believed them.
NOW think back to 1992. GHW Bush was prez on election day, and GDP was over 4% growth!!And yet, klinton and his cheerleaders claimed we were in the worst economy in history. And that lie is what won the day and got klinton elected.
The tariff blitz was stupid. Not saying something didn’t need to be addressed, but taking a sledgehammer to it was doomed to fail. In the end he only managed to hasten the demise of the American empire. Honestly, no one is going to stop this anyway. Unfortunately he’s clueless of this as well. Still messing around with Ukraine, trying to build a global military, being led around by the nose by Israel, oh and how about a war with China. Yeah, that will succeed. /sarcasm. America has been led into a catastrophic situation by decades of corrupt and stupid leaders, maybe Trump “honor” is sitting in the chair when it all come crashing down. Buckle up Freepers, it’s going to be a very bumpy ride.
LOL, how many Teslas did you key today?
Anyone remember what caused our first depression? I do and VDH has the audacity to belong to an organization named after Hoover?
Hey goofball, I’m a long standing conservative. But Trump and his people have to be willing to accept criticism and evaluate it on merit. Doing otherwise you are just in a cult. Make fun of the left all you want - we all do -but if you blindly follow the leader with rah-rah cheers you are no better, just on a different team wearing a different color jersey. My post wasn’t a troll. Tariffs have a place, but this isn’t 1900 and the world is very different. A little discernment was called for. Now, he’s had to back down and though you might not want to admit it, the world now sees him as a blowhard. You can’t approach global diplomacy like buying NY real estate.
Rooting for continued screwing of America, well done.
Who’s rooting against America? Surely not me. Is being critical of leadership when they make bad decisions hating the country? But hey, lots of bots took an untested vax because politicians said they should and righteously pranced around cursing others who questioned and made their own choice to the contrary. Neocons led America into a disastrous war and only a fool would try to double down to try to win it. Time is ticking. The longer Trump dicks around with the Ukes the greater the chance he will own the war. Biden’s war will become Trump’s war!
RE: Anybody remember what caused our first depression?
Victor Davis Hanson addressed that in the article.
Here it is in case you glossed over it:
The Smoot-Hawley Act did not cause a Great Depression,” Hanson countered. “We had a surplus at the time. It was unnecessary, yes. It was punitive, yes. But it was two years after when it fully was implemented … What? Who caused the Great Depression? Buying on the margin and reckless Wall Street investors. So, it’s kind of ironic that Wall Street has a tendency to go bananas, speculate, and hurt the rest of us, and now they’re trying to cite Smoot-Hawley – that had nothing to do with the depression, and they should look to themselves.”
bot, bot, bot, Neocon, neocon, Blather , blather, blather, yada ,yada ,yada.
Remember the days when Freepers were able to make intelligent rational debate of ideas? You obviously don’t.
Liberals: “Trump only cares about lining the pockets of his billionaire buddies.”
Also liberals: “Trump is tanking the stock market on purpose.”
They can say these things without seeing the obvious contradiction. It’s almost like they are crazy or something.
It’s not necessarily a contradiction when you can use OPTIONS to make money even when the market tanks.
