WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge is allowing the Trump administration to move forward with a requirement that everyone in the U.S. illegally must register with the federal government, in a move that could have far-reaching repercussions for immigrants across the country.
In a ruling Thursday, Judge Trevor Neil McFadden sided with the administration, which had argued that they were simply enforcing an already existing requirement for everyone in the country who wasn’t an American citizen to register with the government.

Federal immigration law has long required that people who aren’t American citizens and live in the U.S., including those here illegally, register with the government. Those laws can be traced back to the Alien Registration Act of 1940, which came amid growing fears of immigrants and political subversives in the early days of World War II. The current requirements stem from the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.
But the requirement that people illegally in the U.S. register has been enforced only in rare circumstances. In fact, advocates opposing the government say it hasn’t been universally used since it was first introduced in the mid-1940s.

I must have heard some of those PSAs. I can remember where and when I saw PSA type notices in the Post Office that all aliens must register yearly. They were on your standard 8.5 x 11 piece of paper
I’m 70 and remember them well. They weren’t ominous sounding or anything like that although I can’t think of any other ones, I’ve seen in quite a while, many decades.
In recent years, Green card holders have not been required to register yearly..... So says what I saw on the internet. Though Trump is changing this to enforce the older law. Where all aliens must register yearly.
Made a lot of sense back then. Today, the government hands out cell phones to the illegals like candy.

Yes, and that makes a lot of sense too, if you think about it. The priorities are just different, that’s all. A whole lot different.
If they would geolocated the illegals using their phones, it would make a whole lot more sense.
“Hello, Juan. We are here to collect your phone. Oh, would you please come with us?”
Wouldn’t it make more sense not to let anyone in the country illegally? Then they wouldn’t have to give them cell phones and track them down and some clown in a robe says they need to have a hearing and send ICE after them and fly them somewhere else etc etc
