Judge allows requirement that everyone in the US illegally must register to move forward

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge is allowing the Trump administration to move forward with a requirement that everyone in the U.S. illegally must register with the federal government, in a move that could have far-reaching repercussions for immigrants across the country.

In a ruling Thursday, Judge Trevor Neil McFadden sided with the administration, which had argued that they were simply enforcing an already existing requirement for everyone in the country who wasn’t an American citizen to register with the government.

[snip]

Federal immigration law has long required that people who aren’t American citizens and live in the U.S., including those here illegally, register with the government. Those laws can be traced back to the Alien Registration Act of 1940, which came amid growing fears of immigrants and political subversives in the early days of World War II. The current requirements stem from the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.

But the requirement that people illegally in the U.S. register has been enforced only in rare circumstances. In fact, advocates opposing the government say it hasn’t been universally used since it was first introduced in the mid-1940s.

Well this is an unexpected ruling. I expected the Court to rule "this law is an old law so can't be enforced" or something along those lines.

Looks like the admin is turning up the heat to try to get many more self-deportations.

Good for this judge. The law is unambiguous. There really isn’t any basis to question the law.

Any illegal alien voting, registering to vote, and/or facilitating other illegal aliens to register or vote should be promoted to the head of the deportation list.

This is another brilliant Trump move.
Register, and they can come for you (or not, if they decide you are really nice).
Do not register and you are in violation of law.
You will be deported the moment they catch you.

If I were an illegal, facing this dilemma, I would self deport!

Federal immigration law has long required that people who aren’t American citizens and live in the U.S., including those here illegally, register with the government.

Damn near every other civilized country in the world has their local version of this same law. Some even enforce it.

“All Aliens Must Register” —— Years ago you would see these notices in US Post Office. They were required to register yearly. Back then it pertained to legal immigrants. Due to there being zero illegal immigration, at least where I lived.

The laws behind this are applicable to all immigrants. Legal and illegal.

The Alien Registration Act of 1940 required that all persons who were not citizens or nationals of the United States and were living within U.S. borders go to their local post office and register their alien status with the government123. Aliens were expected to submit the completed registration form at a post office and be fingerprinted4.

Yep. Also if they don’t register they won’t be able to later claim asylum when we capture them.

Facing the dilemma of possibly being shipped off to a Supermax in El Salavador or a military facility on Gitmo an hour after being rounded up, I, too, would self deport!

You will be deported the moment they catch you.

AND, according to the Administration, you will never be able to come back to the US again.

Please move this to the top of Breaking News. This is the game-changer. This decision, if combined with E-Verify enforcement, is the tipping point to get 10M to self-deport before the mid-terms.

“Federal immigration law has long required that people who aren’t American citizens and live in the U.S., including those here illegally, register with the government.”

That is true. If you’re a green card holder you have to do it every year.
