Pete Hegseth reviews plans for space-based 'Golden Dome' US defense system

President Donald Trump's plans for the space-based "Golden Dome" missile defense system to defend the United States has been sent to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's desk for review. Trump has previously spoken about making a missile defense system similar to Israel's "Iron Dome" in order to defend the country.

The system, which would be based in space, was put into motion by Trump during his first week in office. If the project is carried out, it would be the first space-based weapons system to have the ability to destroy missiles launched from ground-based operations, per ABC News.

Trump signed an executive order in January for a potential system to be drawn up, and gave the military 60 days to provide recommendations for the defense system. Trump said in the executive order, "The United States will provide for the common defense of its citizens and the Nation by deploying and maintaining a next-generation missile defense shield."

The defense system is planned to defend the country "against ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other next-generation aerial attacks from peer, near-peer, and rogue adversaries" and will be made up of "space-based interceptors capable of boost-phase intercept."

General Stephen Whiting, the head of US Space Command, said in a speech at an event earlier this week in Colorado, “It’s time that we can clearly say that we need space fires, and we need weapons systems. We need orbital interceptors. We call these weapons, and we need them to deter a space conflict and to be successful if we end up in such a fight."

There have been multiple options that have been looked at and developed in order to fit the order from the White House, but Space Command has not talked about the specifics of the plan and what the defense system

Hegseth and Rubio are among Trump’s cabinet members who have exceeded my expectations so far.

IMHO not good as a 100% solution. But maybe good to intercept high altitude ICBMS at their apogee, while other systems try to intercept them shortly after takeoff and yet other systems try to intercept them on descent.

Even better still, the best tactic is the power and timidity to make an example out of anyone who'd fire an ICBM at us.

They can’t use nuclear warheads (prohibited by treaty) so they would probably be a spaced based version of what was developed under “Star Wars”.
This would be very difficult to implement without having lots of satellites.
Land based from Kwaj is probably a better solution.

I'm tiring of the pendulum swings. The GOP cuts government and incorporates great policies then 4-8 years later the Dems reverse the gains. We really need a GOP control for at least 16 years to make solid changes.

Excellent! Is there anything President Trump doesn’t consider when looking at his big picture? MAGA! This is a man who has learned from his first mistakes.

Uh, I hear there is a man who's company launches multiple satellites every month or so. I think it's called Starlink. Don't know about their military capabilities, but I'm confident his engineers could adapt and change functionality. The name of the company is called, "SpaceX". Sure you know who I'm talking about.

Wiki-—The initial development of the Iron Dome system was undertaken by Israel,
resulting in deployment of the first two Iron Dome systems.

Subsequent funding for additional Israeli Iron Dome systems—-along with repeated
funding for the supply of the interception missiles——has been provided by the United States.

From 2011 to 2021, the US gave a total of $1.6 billion tax dollars to Israel for its
Iron Dome defense system......with another $1 billion approved by the US Congress in 2022.

Indeed - this just sounds like the MIC working the new crowd for all it can get.

Question One should be - what do we have that can take down a simple weather balloon without using a million+ dollar missile to manage it?

We cannot manage that, but "we need orbital interceptors"...

Precisely. That eliminates the limitations of radar and optical detection systems not being able to see below a detection "horizon". It also provides 100% surveillance and alert time.

FWIW, I think Greenland, Alaska, Hawaii, Panama and a poin in the mid east coast, say Charlston figure mightily in this project. Draw a circle centered in the US midland and these points are nearly tangental. That would provide 360 degree coverage with look down shoot down capability.

I guess Assuring The Destruction of the attacker just has not worked so far. Heck, with a Golden Dome, the MIC can really make some money now!!

Beware of the Military Industrial Complex ....

Newsweek 2023 excerpt
Among the nations reportedly purchasing Israeli Iron Domes and related systems:

Multi-mission ELMA-2084 radars were reportedly purchased by the
Hungarian Armed Forces, Canada, Singapore, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In January 2021, Slovakia—a NATO country—announced a deal with Israel to procure 17 radar systems from Israel in a deal valued at approximately $182 million dollars. The deal included the transfer of technology and knowledge from Israel to Slovakia in addition to industrial cooperation.

In November 2022, Hungarian officials expressed interest in the Iron Dome system as radar components were scheduled at the time to be in the nation’s possession this calendar year, according to Defense News.
