China on Thursday urged the United States to meet it "halfway" as US President Donald Trump imposed more levies on Chinese goods but, in a huge relief to global markets, paused tariffs on other countries.

Stocks on Wall Street, across Asia and Europe rocketed in reaction to Trump's announcement that he was halting a levy hike for almost all nations for 90 days.

But Trump also said he was raising tariffs on China to 125 percent from an earlier 104 percent, the latest salvo in an escalating standoff between the world's two largest economies.

"A deal's going to be made with China. A deal's going to be made with every one of them," Trump said at the White House. However, China's leaders "don't quite know how to go about it," he added.

Make all the deals you want with China, they will break them. Seems 47 is trying to push China over the edge the way Reagan did the Soviet Union.

It will work too, because China is worse off than the Soviets were economically.

Unless you can protect your IP in a fair court in China, there’s no market there. Full stop.

China’s commerce ministry warned the tariffs risked “severely” impacting the global economy, but stressed that “the door to dialogue is open”.

“We hope the US will meet China halfway, and, based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, properly resolve differences through dialogue and consultation,” Commerce Ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian said.

define “halfway.”

It's good that China is responding because that's necessary in a negotiation. It opens the door.

Yup- people don’t realize this but the Chicoms economy and real estate market are on the verge of collapse.

And as large as their military is there are a lot of questions as to whether or not its a good fighting force.

Tariffs of 125% went on Chinese goods yesterday. They’ll be coming to the table shortly and will at least ask for a pause during negotiations.

I don’t want a deal with China. The CCP lies, cheats, steals, spies. Any agreement isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. This is the best time to take down the CCP without a hot war.
I would make nice and do the diplomatic stuff and stall. Let’s get new supply chains in place, other trade deals and increased US manufacturing before any deal. Let’s make any deal very weak and easy to get out of.
Dealing with CCP is like dealing with Hamas.

Very well said. I feel much the same way. The Chinese Communists are wholly unreliable, as are all Communists.

Political and economic stability within China depends on China continuing to have unfettered access to American markets. The US from 1990 on gave China huge advantages. Ostensibly the thought was that creating wealth within China would lead to political reform. China instead soon used those advantages to strengthen Party rule and develop a formidable military. The American economy soon stopped critical manufacturing and maintained its living standards largely on the strength of the dollar and its use as the world’s reserve currency. Long term this was not sustainable for the US.As China began to trade US Treasury notes and purchase and control American real estate, it became clear that something had to be done. This may turn out to be Trump’s finest hour.

It’s their navy that counts more than their army. Of course China can’t be conquered. But China can’t defend their sea lanes and most of their energy comes by sea.
Even a soft blockade of forcing tankers to turn back would cripple them.

:Geraldo Rivera heaps praise on Trump over “BRILLIANT” tariff moves.

“I believe that Trump ambushed China ... I just think he wants the best possible deal he can get the United States of America. God bless him for that.”

“That’s why people really dig the guy. That’s why he’s hard to beat. That charisma is unbelievable. I could sing his praises forever ...”

” He suckered China in.”

Make all the deals you want with China, they will break them.

Why the deal must be set up that way, with provisions for when China breaks the rules that automatically trigger a sharp response.

Trump has them boxed in. There’s nothing left to do but cry uncle and try to negotiate the best reciprocal deal they can.

China will keep to the deal as long as Trump or a Republican's in office. If a democrat wins the Presidency, China will give diamonds and cash to 'family' and 'friends' of the Democrat in office. China know how to deal with corrupt American politicians - why do YOU think we're in this mess?

OUR corrupt democrat leaders put us here - anyone want to 'buy a speech' from a democrat for $10,000 a MINUTE? Diamonds, donations to 'foundations' etc all part of 'the deal'... The going rate for selling out the country wasn't even pennies on the thousands of dollars. Bad trade deals were only part of the sell out. Where were the CIA and FBI - were they in on it or were they too stupid to see the obvious? And the press? Too corrupt and stupid to even tell the truth on Biden's mental state...

All companies that do business in China have to sign a loyalty pledge to the CCP.

As such, the owners, board members, and employees of these companies should have any clearances revoked.

The companies themselves should be treated as foreign, not domestic, entities.

That large military force, like all large military forces in modern peer to peer war would be in severe jeopardy once ocean bound. Conceivably the Chicoms could transport theirs to Taiwan but to go any further, it’d be sunk. The same with a Desert Storm force being transferred accross the Pacific or Atlantic. China would take it out before it approached the Asian coast and Russia would do likewise to one crossing the Atlantic.
