~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Benning, Georgia

GAftbenning1

Fort Benning is a United States Army post straddling the Alabama–Georgia border next to Columbus, Georgia. Fort Benning supports more than 120,000 active-duty military, family members, reserve component soldiers, retirees and civilian employees on a daily basis. It is a power projection platform, and possesses the capability to deploy combat-ready forces by air, rail, and highway.

Fort Benning is the home of the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, the United States Army Armor School, United States Army Infantry School, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly known as the School of the Americas), elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment (United States), the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, and other tenant units.

Main Post houses various garrison and smaller FORSCOM units of Fort Benning such as 14th Combat Support Hospital and 11th Engineer Battalion FORSCOM as well as a number of TRADOC-related tenants, e.g. the Officer Candidate School, the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy, and the Airborne School. McGinnis-Wickham Hall (formerly known as Infantry Hall) is the post headquarters and Maneuver Center of Excellence.

Adjacent is the Ranger Memorial and the National Infantry Museum. The Army Infantry School conducts its graduations on Inouye Field, sprinkled with soil from the battlegrounds of Yorktown, Antietam, Soissons, Normandy, Corregidor, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Sand Hill is the primary location of the 198th Infantry Brigade and 197th Infantry Bridge responsible for training Infantry One Station Unit Training (OSUT). Its units include the following:

1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment
2d Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment
2d Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment
1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment
2d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment
3d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment
1st Battalion, 50th Infantry Regiment
2d Battalion, 54th Infantry Regiment
2d Battalion, 58th Infantry Regiment

GAftbenning3

In May 2023, as part of the removal of names associated with the Confederacy, Fort Benning was renamed Fort Moore after General Hal Moore and his wife Julia Compton Moore. In March 2025, the Secretary of Defense ordered that the name of Fort Moore be changed back to Fort Benning. The base name now pays tribute to Corporal Fred G. Benning, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism in action during World War I with the U.S. Army in France in 1918.

Granddaughter recently completed Basic CombatTraining there. It was Fort Moore when she went and Benning when she left.

Lived in Columbus working for Pratt & Whitney for 5 years.
I’m a wargamer and made many friends from Fort Benning. HMGS was an Infantry Ball sponsor in I think it 1993. had a great time, went on stage with a captain friend of mine, who made ltc. now retired as a major. We did a take on whos on first as he tried explaining ranks to me. like who’s the general, etc.. I flubbed a few lines, but it only made it funnier to the crowd. A great community at Benning, god bless them all. BTW at the infantry museum where I did a lectures and wargames on Kasserine and Stalingrad, there was a room full of Japanese katanas in the storage area, all from Japanese General officers. Insanely incredible if you like that kind of thing.

I graduated from Airborne School in November 1976. Vivid memories exist to this day.

Ah, Ft. Benning. Went through CRC there twice.

CRC sucks. Ft. Benning had a decent PX.

Howdy Allegra.

Bet it was “fun” at Ft. Benning during summertime. Summer in that part of GA can be rough. Hot and very steamy.

Howdy, luvie.

Did it warm up nicely today? I hope so for the kitties’ sake.

It stayed cloudy here and it was right chilly - 46 - until the clouds finally moved out around 6 p.m. The temp shot up to 54 for a short time before the sun set.

Still better than Anchorage where Kathy’s had snow almost all day.

During the Korean War, my Father enlisted in the Army and chose to go through the Airborne School in 1951. He told the story that his training unit had assembled at Lawson Field and watched as 1 of the C-119 jump planes came in for a landing. Just before touchdown, the troopers noticed a parachute trailing from the rear stabilizer, and a body hanging on it. They watched the body bounce on the tarmac. Several of the volunteers quit on the spot. Shortly thereafter those remaining were told it was a dummy meant to scare off those of faint heart. Dad got his jump wings and finished his tour of duty with the 508th ARCT, Medical Co., at Benning. They were put on alert and confined to their barracks 2X during 1951-1953, but were not called up to go.

Hey there, radu!

Yes, it was much warmer today. Even now it’s 56, which feels pretty good. I wouldn’t want to stay out and sit in it, but it’s not bad at all. It’s going to continue to heat up till it reaches about 90-92 this coming weekend. Not thrilled with THAT.

Sounds like you had our weather from yesterday today. Did it rain some more or was it just cloudy?

Poor Kathy. I would NOT be thrilled with snow in April. Well, or any other time, if I’m truthful. LOL!
